More positive engagement of shifter, better manual shifting. The handle in front of the shifter is a neutral lock out. If it's like the older shifters you have to lift that to shift into neutral, reverse, and park.

Yes. Once you're in 4th, you tap it back to drop to 3, tap again to go into 2, tap again to go into 1. The handle always returns to the same middle position. Then you tap it forward to go up through the gears, tap to 3, tap to 4, one more tap puts you into neutral, and there's no way to go into reverse accidentally. To go into reverse, you have to tap it back to 4, then lift up on the t-handle, and push the whole thing forward into reverse (or park if you're parking).

Once im in 4th.... you mean if i put it in drive and tap it back 3 or 4 times ill go to first, then i can tap foward up through the gears

or do i put it in Overdrive to do that ????

also, if i dont tap it, it will just stay in drive (or overdrive) for putting around town right ?

Yes you put it in 4th or overdrive, tap it back 3 times and you will be in 1st. Then push the gas and run through all of the gears by just ratcheting it forward. You can leave it in overdrive or drive and it will run just like an automatic, preferably drive (3rd) for around town and overdrive (4th) for highway.

I've heard people say the shifter cable it comes with is junk.

Does anyone know if you can use the stock cable in place of the one it comes with? Someone mentioned that in an old post but I wanted to be clear about it...

I had one in my car for about a month and the cable went bad. The cable has a cheap plastic covering on the outside. when it cracks the inner cable will pop out when you try to shift it. Needless to say it wont shift. I sold it.. After having to try and crawl underneath the car to get it in gear.
I didnt like having to cut up my factory shift plate, and wiring either. I did have a spare shift plate though.

The Ratchet action was kinda cool at first. But for my daily driver I missed the stock shifter. The stock one was easyer to use in day to day driving.

I replaced my stock shifter with the megashifter because that's all I could find for f-bodys and it didn't "bolt in" like it said it would in the advertisement,I like it though,I've heard the cable is way too long and can be remedied with a B&M 3ft cable,I'll keep an eye on it and wrap it in duct tape if I have too, until I get a better cable. I won't remove the shifter just because the cable is bad. you have to be agressive with the ratchet, but thats the way it should be,it will never overshift or go into nuetral,I think the trans likes it better too. not for a novice installer.but the directions are good.

ratchet action works when your working your way from 1-4......not vise-versa. you can't go from 4 and tap it down to 1st. It's definately a pain in the *** , but it's a lot of fun when your done!

So wait a minute, can you ratchet both up and down gears or not?

They are the ultimate. I love hitting the country roads and rowing though the gears. I just keep my hand on the shifter and rip it back coming out of corners and pound it forward to shift when it starts reving again. It is great for drag racing especially if you have a shift light Tach. I didn't like the install but I love it now that it is in and it got rid of 3 problems i had. My reverse lights didn't work right, my shift indicator was messed up and the key wouldn't always come out of the ignition. That last one was really annoying! The cable isn't that bad either. Make sure it isn't chaffing.

I love my ratchet shifter, lots of fun when I'm feeling aggressive and can afford the tickets. I did have a cable break though. But I drive my T/A like it was meant to be driven... It was 40 bucks for a newer, better cable and took about 2 hours to replace, but I'm not very speedy. Get one, you'll thank me later!

Lineb, The console style megashifter is what we are talking about here. Yes, it is a good shifter for your overdrive auto. Allows real control over your automatic, kinda like a stick-shift would be. Glad to hear you purchased one and good luck with install. Cable should last you a good while if you don't really bind it in a way that would put stress on the cable and covering { and if you don't drive it like it is a Winston Cup racer }. I was happy with the shifter and I think you will be too Lineb.

I have had mine for almost 2 years now and all I have to say is I LOVE IT!!! I have had no problems with it since the day I got it. It makes shifting the gears sooo much easier than the stock shifter (I would always miss gears with the stock shifter and lemme put it this way over the past 2 years I have never missed a gear). It makes your car look bada$$ed too. Sure as hell beats that stock black tennis ball with a big button on it

i like the megashifter, my buddy has one in his 81 camaro. however, i like the hurst v-matic better because you can have the ratchet action, or normal gear select. when you take it out of park, its in normal gear select mode, put it in neutrul(sp?)push the handle down, and pull back, BAMMMM you are in rachet mode, and when you put it back in neutrul, it pops out of rachet mode. i think its pretty coo. so how is the hammer shifter? i like the way it looks, but havent really talked to anyone that has one.
