How much will a good black paint job cost?

I'm trying to figure out how much I need to budget for a paint job on the iroc I plan to buy. I'm looking at 87-89 and was planning getting it painted a nice glossy black. If I plan on stripping the car down and sanding it down, how much will it cost to get a good paint job that will wear well. It doesn't have to be show quality as I will be driving it regularly. If I were do strip pretty much everything out of the car could they also spray the engine bay? I'm hoping to keep the job under 2.5-3k as the car really isn't worth a ton of money and I would hate to spend 5k on a paint job and have it get scratched.

If you're really worried about what it's worth then you've gotten into the wrong hobby and you should just leave it alone as it sits. 90% of the time you'll be lucky to break even in the world of sports cars.. Particularly older ones. A good gloss black paint job will run you $4200 or so from a reputable shop if they do all the work. Some shops won't spray if you prep because it is a liability issue, so I can't answer that question.

When I said more than the car is worth I meant I could buy one with good paint for the price of the paint job. Really? Every site I've read and every person I've talked to says you should prep it yourself because it will save you big bucks. I don't care about breaking even as I'm not going to be selling her.

well if you don't plan on selling it then do it right the first time . cheap paint and quick paint job = unhappy owner spend the cash get teh paint i used ppg shop line and it turned out great base clear paint was about 250 about another 100 in sanding and taping materials . i have a buddy that paints and 500 bucks he painted it so total i have about 850 into it's paint and it turned out awsome. I already had the primer from doing the 91 z28 a few months back.

Spraying isn't the hard part. The prep work is really what determines a good paint job. If you did a bad job, then they spray it and end up with bad results.... See where I am going? Which is why they often won't do it unless there's a liability exclusion agreement you both make.

Re: How much will a good black paint job cost?

I totally understand that, if I do a shitty job prepping and send it in to get sprayed, the paint won't take well and will look shitty. I was told that the best bet is to do most of the prep yourself I.e. get it stripped down, all trim off, as much sanding as you can. Then let them do the final sanding to their satisfaction and take it from there. I'm 17 and make very little money so anything I can do to reduce the cost a little I want to do. I totally get that you get what you pay for so I'm trying to see how I can get a good paint job I can afford. Jhainer, that looks sweet! I'm trying to find if any of my friends know a good paint shop who would do a good job. I know a few car junkies but they kind of dont count because they never actually work on there cars, they just sign checks for big *** speakers...

Re: How much will a good black paint job cost?

if you're willing to do all the prepwork, I THINK you can handle spraying the car. Make a project out of it. It's not really difficult (I knew NOTHING about painting beforehand, but a friend who did collision repair taught me).. it's all about consistancy. Now, when you get into special colors and all that, then that changes things... but black is not so bad as long as you lay it down properly and evenly.

Okay, what items would I need for the spraying portion of the job? If I were to do it, how should I set my garage up?

Re: How much will a good black paint job cost?

what i have is a 60 gallon compressor but you don't need anything that big. a good gun hvlp I setup 2 fans at teh door of my garage sucking air out. closed all windows and doors other than the big garage door i rested it on the fans. i wet the floor down after sweeping and cleaning real good and then went to town. mind you my garage that i do all my work in is in my basement of my house so i did put a towel under the door leading to the house to keep the smell out of the house.

Re: How much will a good black paint job cost?

There's a reason they have a PRO in front of the word painter when it comes to doing it right. My friend Mike is a professional painter and to watch him work is an experience I will not soon forget. He can do more in 10 minutes of prep than I could do in a hour and that's doing it right. Other than help with disassembly / reassembly and clean up I just needed to stay out of his way. If you want a beautiful paint job that's going to last find the right shop and ask them what can you do to help with the prep. etc. and still get the warranty.
Heres what you should expect for around $3,000.00 or higher.=

Re: How much will a good black paint job cost?

your right people who paint are real artists. I agree. I have never painted a car before until i did my Iroc the first time the only reason for the second paint job was my kids One drug a cherry picker down the side of my rear bumper the other issues were my twins drug a shovel down the same side of the rear bumper. Now you know the reason for the reapaint wasn't for lack of quality. here is some photos of the before and I will blow your mind alittle the black stripes are rattle canned on there. it took me about an hr to do waited until the next day wetsanded it and polished it back out and added graphics. no one who ever saw then never knew they were rattle can.

this paint job cost me about $200.00 and was my first paint job i ever did.

this is the second paint job i ever did

then Me and a buddy repainted the Orange car about a month ago. here it is just painted and cut with 3m still need to put the stripes back on it and polish it out.

here it is after one coat of clear.

so yes pro can do a good job but they can also take your money. I have seen people spend a couple thousand on a paint job and i could do better with a rattle can. so like the old saying goes if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. so far in 3 repaints jambs and all i have a total of 1300
200 approx in iroc first paint job
200 approx in the 91 z repaint
900 in the iroc repaint and that was i gave the painter buddy 500 just because. he didn't ask for anything. I just gave it to him.

Re: How much will a good black paint job cost?

RONUSMC thank you very much your car is gorgous also. your paint is amazing.

and i used Urethane paint the black car single stage the orange car single stage. but it was repainted about a month ago in base clear urethane.
waiting to get the stripes repainted once i finish the motor work. my beffy 454 went south on me. so i dropping another 454 in it but the headers are fighting me the motor comes out tonight again for the 3rd time I'm ditching the super comps for now since the 454 is alot calmer than my last 454. i can use the small tube patriots on this motor. then it is off to the exhaust shop to have a 3 inch fabed up for it. and still waiting to get a new drive shaft since i changed out the th350 for a th400. yea when done in a few weeks it should be a whole different car.

Re: How much will a good black paint job cost?

Expect to pay between 4,500 and 8,000 at a body or restoration shop. I have gone to well over 8 shops for quotes. About 5 of them where in the 4,500-5,500 range. And the others were higher than that. They prefer you not to do the prep work, however you can save by disassembling the car. Such as side moldings, emblems, weather stripping, so on. Shops told me this saves between 600-800. Also expect it to take between 1-3 months. For whatever reason, this type of work falls at the bottom of their priority list. Collision work seems to always be the first priority. 6 of the 8 shops said it would take between 1-3 months. 2 said it would be in and out in 2-3 weeks. The shops with the quickest turn around time also had the lower quotes, that makes me wonder if it's a get what you pay for scenario, or if they are simply less busy.

jhainer , your car looks great. That's a true example of taking your time, and doing it the right way by yourself. The stripes look awesome. Would have never guessed they were rattle canned.

My husband is a professional body tech by trade- however, he doesn't charge the body shop prices. He's known in our area for doing great work.

If you want a good paint job, the person has to follow the process people detail when their cars are featured in a mag - in a nutshell: paint, sand, de-dust, paint, sand, de-dust paint. The people who don't bother sanding wind up with ripply images reflected in their paint. Search ebay for "1978 Pontiac Trans Am WS6" (the one in Utah) Then look at the reflection in the 4th picture , between the chicken and the back edge of the door.

^ That kind of paint job is for the people with the deepest pockets who want the nicest possible paint on their show cars. You can have a very nice paint job without doing this and still spend 10k
