My 87 Camaro Iroc-z28 Dumpster Paint Paintjob

So, i was very undecided on how to paint my car, I didn't wanna spend alot because paint doesn't last, and something easy to spray for my first time.

The paint came from a employee of a company that painted dumpsters hence "dumpster paint". Its an orange color that we added some acetone to so it would thin out. I like to call it "HEMI ORANGE" just to make mopar people mad (No had just love the sensitivity)

So I did the entire car, with thoughts of doing either heritage stripes, or hockey stick stripes, in white or black.

(Website won't let me upload other photos so will post a link of rest of photos)

(Bear in mind one of the things i wanted to try that i didn't see was solid colored T-Tops. So Having two sets of T-Tops I painted one set full to give it a hardtop/targa top look).

The car i had trade my 98 camaro v6 for. It was unrunning sat for a while, wasn't together and had been next to a house that caught on fire.

The first color scheme i had was to do a "F-Bomb" tribute car. So i did a rattle can green primer that looked amazing, and I had orders some vinyl graphics to complete the look and then after a week the paint burned off in the sun. While looking i couldn't find a good army paint color I liked, so that was out of the question. I then thought of white until the orange presented itself.

Sounds like you need to be the owner of a crappy import car. You seriously think that people are going to praise your work when you come onto an enthusiast forum and talk of painting the car with rattle can paint, army green paint and now dumpster orange. You sound like you need to see a psychiatrist.

Oh, by the way, paint does last if you take care of it. Crappy paint, not designed to be used on a car, will not last on a car as you have already found out.

Re: My 87 Camaro Iroc-z28 Dumpster Paint Paintjob

This guy posted on facebook. He may as well have totaled the car. Fitting that it's painted with dumpster paint, because that's exactly where it belongs.

The worst part is, people were actually telling this joker his car looked good. It's a damn shame, because it looked like a nice original Iroc that would have been a stunner with a nice coat of GOOD paint.

Re: My 87 Camaro Iroc-z28 Dumpster Paint Paintjob

I think its great how you have the nerve to tell me, I ruined the car by painting it, fixing the damage to the car and putting it back on the road.

Your opinion of me totaling the car by some paint being put on is extreme, paint is removable. The worst part is you have the nerve to tell someone did all this to repair a car and then step outside the box on one thing as simple as paint. This car is a stunner in my book and others who arn't simple minded.

Hence the name "Dare to be Different"

@tom Either you're trying to insult me or just curious it was sprayed on. I didn't roll on with house paint. Which also looks good.

I would like someone to show me how they can tell my paint is different from someone else paint. Can you look at my car and another car and tell this was dumpster paint.

If you can't see the difference between your paint and others that were done correctly, then you can't be helped.

You're not stepping outside of any box. Different or unique does not mean something looks good. It'd be unique if I covered my car in plywood and stained it cherry oak, but I wouldn't show up at a car show and expect to be taken seriously.

I don't know what you expected. You painted your car with dumpster paint, then posted on a site full of enthusiasts. Facebook is mostly clowns that have no business near 20+ year old cars, so obviously you got a different response.

Everyone has to start somewhere , its not a showroom finish by any stretch of the imagination but its probably not the last car he will ever paint either.

Quit being so hard on the guy and either appreciate that he is happy to have a car that is one colour , that he painted himself , offer some CONSTRUCTIVE advice or as my Dad used to say ... if you don't have anything nice to say dont say anything at all...

enthusiast forum, Thats a joke. This may be one, but you are treating it no way near one.

Enthusiast -a person who is highly interested in a particular activity or subject.

I am a person who is highly interested in camaros, this is a board for people highly interested in camaros. I share my camaro and you tell me to buy an import.

That is not an enthusiast, an enthusiast would see i brought this car back from the dead, would see i have a clear passion for my car and drive my car. An enthusiast would appreciate another member with similar feelings towards the same thing.

Thank you, pretty sure i stated this was the first car I have painted. There is some orange peel, which i will buff out in summer also it was outside painted. Why would I put showcar paint on this, outside, first time painting.

There's plenty of people on here that would have been more than happy to help you with a budget or a first time paint job. Lots of guys have been in the same situation you are, painting with a budget. Using a single stage paint would have put you way ahead of the game, less effort, better long term durability, and a WAY nicer finish.

No one is telling you that you don't like the cars or that you're stupid, or even that you didn't put effort into it. It's more to do with the fact you took a short cut, and used paint that has no business being put on a car.

Re: My 87 Camaro Iroc-z28 Dumpster Paint Paintjob

There was a guy on here a few years back that painted his camaro with red barn paint and ended up with the same results in both paint quality and comment quality. I am not a fan of what you did, but I will give you credit for thinking outside the box. That being said I am curious what type of t-tops you painted. Were they glass or Lexan? I painted a set of Lexan ones for my '86 Iroc a few years ago because they were super scratched up. Reason i ask is that I would think that the paint will just peel off of then if they're glass.

Oh and on a side note I work with a guy who painted his '79 F150 with green house paint 10 plus years ago with a roller and it has held up quite well lol!

cut the guy some slack. he didn't want to spend a lot of money, and the car is at least one color now. all you people telling him he ruined the car, feel free to pay for a paint job for him. he worked with what he had, i have rattle canned cars before, until i got around to being able to afford real paint. be happy the car is on the road and not rotting in a junkyard.

Did you guy's know there's no such thing as "dumpster paint" ?

Do you really think a waste company with hundreds of dumpsters or any industrial company would use cheap paint on things that set out in the elements 24-7 with zero care ?

I would tend to think they use a better quality industrial coating than automotive paint, we've had the same dumpster at work for over 10 yrs. and it still shines and looks better than newer cars go'n down the road.

I don't follow the "less effort" either, prep is the same no matter what's in the gun. I've been around and sprayed industrial equipment and from what I've seen, automotive paint would last no time with zero care on such equipment.

Atleast, Phirewire didn't use spray bombs or latex......

So you get upset and run to Facebook and claim people on this site ruin cars for you. Opinions are like *******s, everyone has one and they all stink. Get thicker skin or don't post. I personally would never paint a car with anything but automotive paint. All three of my projects need paint work in various ways. I am focusing on the drivetrain, suspension, and interior in that order before I do my pain t work. All the being said, it's your car do with it what you want but don't get butthurt when people don't like or approve of what you did.

Re: My 87 Camaro Iroc-z28 Dumpster Paint Paintjob

My motto : do it right or don't.

There's no point in doing an half assed job. While I salute the effort, and I'd rather see it on the road than in a dumpster, it doesn't make it look much better and won't last, so why bother ? It may even make things worse as cheap paint can react or be a pain to sand.

This is my first paint job (and only one so far) :

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps14b99c63.jpg
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...pse7c175b4.jpg
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...pscc3bcb94.jpg

It's not perfect by any means, but doing it right by using the appropriate products and tools is the only way to do it and expect to be complimented about it.

Re: My 87 Camaro Iroc-z28 Dumpster Paint Paintjob

Is his car and he can do what he wants with it. Not everyone has access to garages and the best paint to paint a car with. You try painting a car with 300-400 dollar paint (not including prep costs) and raising a family or whatever... Some just want to have a car from their youth and try their best to keep it from rusting away.

Like myself for example... I was laid off my last job and I pretty much need to start over on a new one, but I still try to restore my 89 GTA as best as possible. Can I afford good paint? No. Heck I don't even have a garage to put it in when it finally comes time to paint it. So I (like others) will use budget and rattle can primers and paints to AT LEAST protect the metal until such time I can get her properly painted.

I know its not the best, but sometimes you have to play the hand you are dealt. No matter how much it sucks.

Re: My 87 Camaro Iroc-z28 Dumpster Paint Paintjob

I think maybe Phirewire probably maybe shoulda coulda I woulda left out the "Dumpster" part in his post. But when you put "Dumpster" with Camaro, Firebird, 3rd gen, or Yugo for that matter, it just won't be taken too seriously.

He could have said something along the lines of.........

" I wanted to improve the appearance of my IROC by using some leftover industrial "hemi orange" paint I received free from a friend, being that I do not have a lot of cash to paint it right at this time. My future plans are to do a better quality refinish when time and money will permit. I just want to preserve what I have to keep it from getting worse."

Now the painting of the T-Tops and weatherstripping?????????? That just went a little over the edge.

JMHO only, to each his/her own

Re: My 87 Camaro Iroc-z28 Dumpster Paint Paintjob

The fact that he mentioned dumpster paint, painted the ttops, painted the weatherstripping, didn't mask off the engine, painted the door handles, didn't mask off anything, tells me he wasn't trying to do his best work on a budget. We all know that finances could be tight, but if that's the case, then throwing any money at the car is a waste. It's all about his attitude and how he did it. The attitude of, "I didn't wanna spend alot because paint doesn't last" and then this. He asked for what he's getting and he deserves it!

I also forgot to address his definition of an enthusiast. While he is right in his definition, he is wrong in how he's interpreting it. An enthusiast is defined as "one who is ardently attached to a cause, object, or pursuit" (Merriam's). Ardently is defined as "having, expressive of, or characterized by intense feeling; passionate; fervent" (Dictionary.com).

Anybody that is passionate about something or has intense feelings about something does not take kindly to somebody else defacing what they cherish. Also, if you are passionate about it, doesn't that also mean that you want the best for it? You won't see a soccer enthusiast walk into a stadium full of other enthusiasts, wearing an American football jersey, carrying a football and be accepted by all those around him.

Re: My 87 Camaro Iroc-z28 Dumpster Paint Paintjob

I was all for "using what you have available on the cheap" until I saw that engine bay. They invented masking tape for a reason. Cardboard, recycled newspapers... anything would have been better than getting all that over spray in there. I wont go far as to say the car is "ruined" by any means, but it's certainly not going to win any high praise either. The spray job looks good in pictures, but the prep work was horrible and just ruins it. Like others said, painting the t-tops and weatherstripping and door handles, just makes it look like it was a rushed job, even if you took 1,000 hours to do it, it will never look that way to the bystander. I applaud you for taking the time to save the car from sitting and rotting, but the execution is just mind boggling.

scottmoyer,

Thank you so very much for your input in this thread and expressing how I and others of us feel about these cars.

Hopefully members considering "Defacing" a Third Gen. will be reminded why this site is here.
