My first paint job

3 coats of acrylic enamel....some defects in finish that will have to be fixed in the spring, but I don't think it turned out so bad....

How durable are acrylics when it comes to keeping their shine?

they don't hold as long as a good base clear.

noce job on the black its hard to shoot a black car and have a nice smooth body. nice job. why did you go with the single stage?

thanks....I went with the single stage partly because I was told that it was easier (not quite true, come to find out), and because of cost. After doing all of the body work, I was nearly broke.

Next time around, when I weld in some new sheet metal in a few years, I probably will go with base/clear...but not sure if I'll tackle that myself....depends on what kind of job I find after I graduate in May....

Thats a pretty good job for a first time at painting (especially with black--brave man). If you wanna do two stage next time, I recommend practicing on some small stuff first. The base goes on easy, but the clear taks some practice to get use to. After a couple cars, you will get the clear flow pretty good. But the ost important part is the bodywork, and it looks like you got that done well (paintjob is only worth what is underneath).

good Job with the paint a two-stage paint is much harder especially for a beginner. When I first painted for the first time I did a two-stage paint Job that came out horrible. The thing I did wrong was I painted the car Outside when it was about 100° out and humidity was 90. The basecoat layed good but The clearcoat was drying before it even hit the car. When you buy the paint and chemicals you have to make sure you buy it for the right temperature that you are going to be spray in the car at

I know what you mean about the difficulty of base/clear and temperature....I watched my friend's father paint my friend's 84 Camaro base/clear, and he had a bunch of trouble. The base color was that darker metallic blue that the early 3rd gens sometimes had, and he laid on both the base and clear on in humid, very hot temperatures. And like you said, the clear was drying before it hit the car, which made for a very dull, grainy finish. He eventually got it right....but I think that was cuz the weather finally got better for it.

I decided I was better off not learning base/clear on this particular car.

Indeed, body work makes the paint job. I labored for 3 months to make sure I got it right...let me show you what I had to start with when I bought this car (another reminder why winter rats are a necessity in NY state):

in order for enamel to keep a long lasting shine...it just has to be taken care of...if you can do that...it will last just as long as base clear. Base Clear is a more effortless paint..meaning that is doesn't require as much attention...as enamel.

What kind of care is good to prolong the life of enamel? Anything other than keeping it clean, and maybe a wax?

You can't just let it sit around with no protection...it will oxidize in just a matter of time. If your going to drive it all the time, make sure it has some kind of protectant on it...or it will turn dull. The best thing is to have it in a garage. My car is a show car and is in the garage most of the time...it's never out in the elements that can harm a painted surface. So, I don't wax it...I just polish it constantly
