Hoodpins on an 87 Z28

I've been thinking about getting hood pins for my 87 Z28, the hood on one of my other cars flew open on me the other day, and even though my Camaro has a stock hood and a working latch I'm still wouldn't mind the extra security, I was wondering if anyone else has put hood pins on their third gens and how they turned out, any pictures/ advice would be great.

Re: Hoodpins on an 87 Z28

I have aerocatch pins on my Camaro and they lock. I have a video on the install if you’re interested. I needed to delete the factory hood latch bracket to fit my heat exchanger, and I really wasn’t a fan of hood pins.. After installing these I would do it again even if I didn’t need to.

Once upon a time, the dirty beaner beater had a jacked up hood latch. Don't judge, it was a $200 beater, ran and drove.

It's like thirdgens were designed to have them. There's a nice elevated pad on the rad support next to the hood adjuster snubbers. The bottom is open, giving access to bolt the studs in. Lower the hood onto the studs and mark where the holes need to go. End result is either vintage racer, or JCWhitney domestic ***** depending on the day of the week and who's looking. You still need to keep the latch if you don't want people to pull the pins while you're parked someplace, and or stealing your battery, or whatever. Unless a person has a good reason to have them, I probably wouldn't rush into drilling holes to mount them. They attract attention you don't want. All of it. On a later car, they tend to look REALLY Ricky-Racer. Putting them on a rusty, multicolored, crapwagon helps them fly under the radar and go unnoticed. When I junked the Camaro, I salvaged the hood pins, haven't put them on anything else because I haven't had another jacked up latch, or anything ugly enough, and they either attract kids that want to race you, or ne'er-do-wells that can't fight temptation and keep their hands to themselves. Like I said, all the negative attention you don't want.

Re: Hoodpins on an 87 Z28

Thanks Matt. I would love to put these on my 84 TransAm (and ditch the factory latch), but the latch area is different between Camaros and Firebirds. The Firebird has a huge sheet metal piece tying the entire area together. I think removing that panel would leave the nose too unsupported. I would also love to put the 4th gen washer tank in that area.
Has anyone else done this to a Firebird/TransAm?

I have the Aerocatch pins on mine and love them. I've had aerocatch on the last 3 cars I've owned and every car I have after this point will have them too.

Thanks for all the replies, the aerocatch pins are nice, little out of my budget though since college is taking all my money lol, I'm still going back and forth over whether or not I'll get a set of pins, If I do get them ill be sure to post them in this thread.

Re: Hoodpins on an 87 Z28

I am considering ordering these in a bout a week actually. I really like the style. I would NOT use the lanyards/cables though.

those look nice, they are the style I was thinking about getting, I do like the lanyards though, I think if I end up getting a pair it'll be that style but in black

Re: Hoodpins on an 87 Z28

Not using the lanyards is a good way to lose the pins, or have someone walk off with the pins. They make nylon coated cable if a person were worried about scratching the paint.
