Just to put it out there you should be using the parking brake on the automatic as well. (look it up, its in the owners manual) Thats why yours is probably shot, you or the previous owner (probably both) never used it.

Re: new E-brake?
I was pleasantly surprised to find that O'Reilly's had replacement
e-brake cable available for $16 per copy. When I got them, I could
understand the cost: the housing is a smaller diameter, the inner
cable is not plastic coated, and there are no insulating bumpers attached.
Classic Industries offers some at $35 per copy, which may be
closer to OEM quality. Since hi-perf driving, like "drifting" is not
in the plan, these will probably be adequate.
I'm not sure what you're expecting "from the handle back"...
The activator handle pulls a single cable, that goes through
the floor pan. Mine is not adjustable, but there is some kind of
spring tensioner built into the handle. Underneath, there is an
adapter (fixed, like mine, or adjustable like the picture) that
connects connects to the two rear cables. The rear cables
connect into the braking mechanism, either drum or disc.
If you have working rear brakes, the activating mechanisms
are probably in place.
Good luck

Re: new E-brake?
Well I'm not completely sure what the entire setup consists of I've looked at it before. Is it just the cables that need to be replaced or is there more to it? Also I'm switching to a LS1 rear will that change anything?
