Remove stock antenna connector?

I'm putting a Kenwood deck unit in my wife's 92 Z/28 and the stock male doesn't seem to fit well in the Kenwood female connector. Is it ok to cut them both off and just use regular male/female wire connectors?

Thanks
Jeff

Scoshe actually offers an adapter kit to fit the antenna to aftermarket radios, it just plugs into your antenna and then into the radio.
I think it's available at Walmart or online.
Trying to wire up another solution is tricky because the wire in the antenna lead is very thin.

You will probably need an adapter. The older antenna cables were a bit bigger than the ones of today.

He probably has the smaller GM adaptor, most of the car stereos today still come with the larger antenna jack.

You should be able to snag an adaptor at Wallyworld, Advance or Auto Zone.

Wow,
My car has the old big antenna, (course, it's an 84...) and the radio has the smaller jack.

Re: Remove stock antenna connector?

GM changed to a smaller antenna plug sometime in the early '90s.And just about all aftermarket radios come with the smaller antenna jack(industry standard for several years). As stated you can pick one up at just about any electronics store, automotive parts store ordepartment stores that sell automotive stereo equipment.hope these numbers help.Check http://www.crutchfield.com to find exactly what you need but you can probably find it locally to you.

Metra P/N AW-GM20(aftermarket receiver to original factory antenna)The GM20 part is generally found as part of the number no matter the maker of the adaptor.
Metra P/N AW-GM21(adapts '91 up GM radio/aftermarket to earlier antenna leads)
