1.8 Cu.Ft. Too Much For A Single 12" Sub?
I'm looking at getting an Elemental Designs 13Ov.2 and have access to a box with about 1.8 Cu.Ft. of air space. Is this too big for a single 12" sub? How would it affect the sound?
The sub:

Thanks for any help.

1.8 seems a bit much even with it ported.. if you port it i would go about 1.5-1.6

Okay Couple of questions! What are the actual dimensions of this box? What kind of music do u listen to?and most importantly what kind of sound do u want out of it?low and booming mostly just a little boom or do u want it to listen to AC/DC and have just a lower note here and there?!If u know the herz that would be very helpful?!if not by ur description of the questions abovei can get really close!?

depends on the specs of the sub. the alpine type x subs call for 1-2 cubic feet per sub ported. the jl w7's call for 1.75 so depending on the quality and output of the sub you may be alright but if it is a cheap sub it is way too much air space. could always use polyfill.

ED's own specs are saying 1.8 is too big for even a ported enclosure. if you can trim the box down to 1cu ft, you would be in good shape for sealed. if you want to go ported, depending on how much room the port takes up, you may still have to modify (as they recommend 1.5L before port displacement).

didn't notice that you had the ed on the first post I would go with the type x or JL's better sound quality and about the same price.

Yeah I figured it was too big. Especially since I want a sealed box. I just wanted to hear some other opinions. Why the hell doesn't anyone make a single sub box for a third gen?
I'm just looking for something to round out the sound in my car. I'd like it to be able to get loud in the car, but I don't need the whole neighborhood to hear me. I mostly listen to newer rock along with some hip hop and electronic music. I like tight sounding bass more than big and boomy.
Would I be able to drive a Type X or W7 with a 600w amp?

yeah 600 would be good enough but you wouldn't be using the sub full strength but since you aren't that worried about being the loudest that is fine and the sub will last longer anyway. if you are going for tight bass then go with the type X the JL's are more for loud booming bass.

i would get better subs than a type x and a w7... both are good subs but there are better subs for the money. JL's stuff is way overpriced for what it is. w7's go for over 500 dont they? around 470 used? i would go with a an RL-i 10" if your going to cut that box down.. only needs 500 watts i believe and sounds awesome

I only mentioned the Type X and W7 because jstoltz suggested them in an earlier post. After checking out their prices, it looks like they're well out of my budget. I don't really want to spend much more than $200. Thats why I mentioned the ED 13Ov.2 in my original post.
When you say RL-i, I assume you mean SoundSplinter. I don't know much about them, but looking at their website it doesn't look like they make a 12" RL-i. Is the RL-p 12 any good? It looks like it's closer to my budget than the Type X and W7.

the type X 10" is only $200 with shipping the 12" is around $40 more if you are looking for tight bass the 10 is fine.
the w7's are high though a friend of mine had a set but I don't remember which site he got them from but he paid $185 per 12 (he had 2)

$185 for a w7? you sure its a w7? i see w7's going for $400+... and yes soundsplinter makes some awesome subwoofers.. very SQ oriented, i have a 15" RL-p.. man was it loud, hit all sorts of notes and was so clean, im not trying to say anything bad about the w7 or the type x cause there both good subs, the type x could porbably be had for for a little cheaper, but the w7 is expensive and imo there is other subs out there that are just as good and are a hell of a lot cheaper, but if you want to spend $400 look into DD (Digital Designs) they make some of the best subs ive seen

Cardomain price matches. Car domain will price match websites with the worst feedback on the history of the planet. You know, those websites that when you order take six months to ship, and then all you get is a brown box with no packing material with your item bouncing around inside? Yea. Those guys. Car Domain will price match their scalping rate. I've never paid full price for stereo equipment that I could order from Car Domain.

I just used froogle or pricegrabber to find the lowest price to have car domain match it.
