Requested: photo of 4th gen Delco head unit.

I have a bunch of 97-03 Grand Prix head units kicking around in the house, and I'm thinking of installing a modified one into the FireBird. I know the 4th gen radios have been installed into the 3rd gen cars. I would like to perform all modifications to the head unit, so as NOT to modify the car in any way if at all possible. Would someone be so kind as to post up photos of the stock GM radio for the 4th gen? I'm interested in the mounting flanges and the back of the unit.

Thanks!

Re: Requested: photo of 4th gen Delco head unit.

no way I repeat no way it will fit without modifications to the car. Without modifications the head unit will stick out 3 inches. I had to cut the pod almost in half in the back. It looks good but it wont fit unless you trim.

I used L brackets to mount it

Re: Requested: photo of 4th gen Delco head unit.

I'm planning on trimming the radio, not the car. I have no issues with relocating circuit boards to make this fit. My car is almost completely untouched, and I plan on keeping it that way. Anything I do modify, is bolt-on, and can be replaced with the large collection of the original stock parts at any time.

Re: Requested: photo of 4th gen Delco head unit.

im not sure but you will have to get new circuit boards because the one in there now goes from front to back and its one piece and there is some smaller ones too. the smaller ones wouldnt be such a problem but that larger one is going to cause some pain, but put some pictures up after you do it. It sounds awesome

Re: Requested: photo of 4th gen Delco head unit.

Pardon me if I missed some blatant detail, but I have a Delco unit from a 98 SS in my Iroc, and it fit perfectly without mods.

Like I said, I'm sure there's some detail I'm missing.

Re: Requested: photo of 4th gen Delco head unit.

^^He has a HU from a Grand Prix, apparently they're different, can't say I've ever seen one though.

Anyway, if you're that concerned with keeping your car untouched - why not just buy one from a fourth gen f-body? They aren't that expensive and you can get one that lights up to match your dash and everything.

Or just buy another radio pod and modify it to fit, then if you want to change it all back just swap out the pods and be done with it.

Re: Requested: photo of 4th gen Delco head unit.

Ok, so after a bit of hackin' it's all good. I thought long and hard about cutting the inside of the radio pod. I then decided that I still want to put the original back eventually, so I chose my cuts wisely. I also wanted to keep the stabilizer hole in the back for the center peg, which exists on the new(er) radio and is in the exact same spot. I figure that cutting some part of the car that is never seen will probably not reduce it's value that much, if at all. I did open the new Grand Prix radio, and was going to modify the chassis, but decided that it was doable, but a lot of work. I have some free time, but not that much. I think I got all this done in an hour...

Unfortunately, the new radio's output levels are too high for the stock subwoofer amp inputs, so I'm going to bypass it for now until I install some L-pads or the likes to bring the levels down.

Now that's just damn sexy right there:

(For reasons unknown, the LCD looks pink in the photos. It's actually orange like the rest.)
