Is there a Delco CD indash that will fit a 1984 Trans Am
I have a 1984 Trans Am. The stock indash is nice. I want to keep the stock look. I was wondering if an indash with a CD deck would fit from a later Model. I don't want to alter the dash.I am an electronics technician with an a associates degree in Electronics Techology. So wiring isn't a real big deal.

My 87 GTA had a large deck (4 inchs tall and about 6 in wide), you should take a look at 4th gen decks going in to 3rd gens. I did that last summer with a 1999 cd deck from a grand prix, Looks great.......looks stock.....and fits in nicelly.

Just about any delco cd player from 1990-2002 will work for you. Some have different dog ear mounts welded on which you would just have to alter the mounting holes. That would be hidden so its no big deal.Other than that and the change of wiring pigtails you should be good to go.I have early 1990`s Buick cd players in both of my irocs.Looks like it came from the factory with it
Re: Is there a Delco CD indash that will fit a 1984 Trans Am
And another thing too, the gm line up all have there own interier colours, (Pontiac Red- orange, Chevy Green,........etc.) Your 84 pontiac should have red, orange, yellow instruments, gage needles etc. So try to get a PONTIAC CD player.... at night when you turn on your headlight your deck lights and gages will MATCH....some details make a BIG difference...... good luck...GTA Paul!
Re: Is there a Delco CD indash that will fit a 1984 Trans Am
So look for decks out of pontiacs, all decks are about the same. Some have cd with a 7 band equelizer, some without eq. some without cd just fm/am cassette. But all pontiacs have the Same colour (red- orange) display lights inside them. So instulling a deck from chev will light up Green (ex. Clock, station present butten, etc.) There's thread about 4th gen radios going into 3rd cars, so go at the top of THIS page hit search and type "4th gen decks on 3rd gen cars"... good luck....GTA Paul!

Dose anybody have a pic of the pigtail needed to do this conversion? I picked up a 98 pontiac cd player at a swap meet and I got the harnest from the junkyard today and no matter which way I wired it I couln't get the screen to light up although it would take in cd's and the controlls lit up.

When I hooked mine the issue I had was the power antenna wire (99 Grand prix don't have power antenna's). My buddy has a 03 Grand Prix and his back light burnt out this past fall, maybe yours is too. Dealers can still order these LITTLE lights, $4.00 CDN, easy to replace....Try that it sounds like that is your problem.

I'll have to give that a try I hope that is all thats wrong but I can't get the cd or radio to work even though the radio faceplace buttons are lighting up. I am not sure which wires on the pigtail are for the speakers and which aren't used at all.
Re: Is there a Delco CD indash that will fit a 1984 Trans Am
Well 8 wires are for your speakers, funny thing is the wire colours matched mine(speakers). And I think that there 3 others, 1 main power, 1 ground, 1 ignition power. I picked up a wiring harnest that links your old stock pigtail to your new stock deck, to avoid the guess work. $12.00 CDN. Most audio shops should have them (GM harnest very common).

No, that's what I got inside my C5! But I remember quite well the factory radio inside the thirdgen and considering how GM tends to stick with the same dimensions for quite some time, they look about the same size.
The difference being the CD player from the C5 doesn't have the graphic equalizer like the old Delco tape deck had in my thirdgen. If you want, measure the dimensions of the radio you have and I'll measure the one in my C5 and let you know if they are the same.

my 99 grand prix deck is about 3 1/2" X 7 3/4" with in the face plate. And you could add on 1/4 to those measurments, that's what the face bracket is hiding

The deck thats going into my 87 TA is the stock unit I pulled out of my 97 Grand Prix. If your third gen is older than 89, you will have to get the newer style wiring harness, but most junkyards will let you have em for under $5. You may have to do some modding to the mounting brackets, but it will fit in otherwise with no issue and match the interior pretty well.

Re: Is there a Delco CD indash that will fit a 1984 Trans Am
A little tip for those who don't want to butcher there 89 and older stereo plug. GM made from factory an adapter in cavalier's that had the older connector on one and and the newer GM connector on the other end , look in 90ish cavalier and you will find it behind the dash , it actually unplugs like something aftermarket.
I see these pontiac decks so cheap , i can get a monsoon deck right now for $20 but I am not 100% sure if they will work
any ideas? I looked at the harness in the yard and it seems to have all of the colors mine does. The main problem being is I hear it communicates with the car its taken from. Problem being is I cannot find anyone who has tried to power it up in a older car. Right now im sporting a factory pontiac deck with EQ , audiobauhn speakers in the rear and pioneers in the front , sounds really good and loud.

1A Dan no worries.....
The_Warth, cool info on the cavilier harness. The only thing I've heard about the monsoon decks (which is awsome if you got it, thumbs up) is that the car it came from needs it hooked to run/drive, it works with THAT car computer somehow.....But as far as I know it SHOULD work just fine in YOUR car, your cars computer is DOES NOT depend on it. For $20 I would go for it.....Monsoons are NOT cheap in Canada, wish I had one, GOOD LUCK!
