Help with various aspects of tire well box *PROJECT FINISHED*
M'kay, so I'm trying to build a box for the spare tire well in my 88 maro. It flipping sucks trying to do for a 12" sub.
Anyhow, couple questions. I'm using an MTX Thunder6000 T6124. I'm trying to figure out how much volume the speaker takes up so I can calculate that into my box volume, but for the life of me I can't find it. The pdf for the speaker gives inside box and outside box displacement values, but they give inches squared. I need cubic inches right? It is volume after all. I'm working with really tight measurements for this box, so I need as exact numbers as I can get.
Second, when making a sealed box, does the speaker care what shape the box is? Does it prefer square/rectangular ones? Or can it look like a tetris piece and the only thing that matters is the volume?

Re: Help with various aspects of tire well box
call mtx for the volume, your best bet would be fiberglass, you can hide it in there or go for the gold and do a full stretch of the panel and build it on the backside, or build the box and cut into the panel to expose the sub. the only thing limiting you is your imagination and skill.
the box can be shaped however you want, the less angles the easier, but a perfect rectangular box can have issues with a standing p wave. your best bet is to go to the 12volt.com and do some reading, there's alot more involved than people like to think

Re: Help with various aspects of tire well box
yea your best bet would be to go with wood/fibreglass constructed box Ive got a sealed box for 2 12's MTX thunder 8500 with a mtx thunder 1000 sub amplifier controlled by kenwood excelon kdc-x995 deck and it sounds great. Ive got to pull the box and refinish it Ive had the box for like 3-4 years. the shape of the box doesnt relly matter either just as long as you get the cubic footage right on the inside for the sub. Sealed boxes easily sound the best and are much more forgiving then ported or bandpass boxes but also take more power to run than the other box designs. A ported box relies on more of an "echo" effect and youve got a higher chance of damaging the sub at higher volumes and nobody wants that at all. But yea have fun building your box!

Re: Help with various aspects of tire well box
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I don't have the cash to buy and start learning fiberglass. I went ahead and made my box though, I'll post pictures of it tomorrow when there's better light.

Well, got the box done. It's not the prettiest thing, but Damn it sounds good, and my cargo area is totally open now. It fits under the interior panel without having to shave the vents too.

And with the panel on...

And I went ahead and hid the amp in the other side of the back too.

What do you think? I had the first box done quick, but making one that I could actually slide into the well took another day and a half.

Re: Help with various aspects of tire well box
Yeah, the panel vibrates, but that's mostly cause the PO broke all the mounting tabs, so I gotta buy more. It's only noticeable if you have the hatch open and are listening to it from back there though.
