Need Help with 89 GTA Stereo.

I have an 89 GTA and the stereo has an intermittent but becoming permanent problem. I have the model with the controls on the steering wheel as well as on the stereo, so when it says "loc" you press mute on the steering wheel and that unlocks it, then the stereo will display the time, and then you have to press the power button on the stereo and it all comes on. The problem is now, when I start the car nothing is on at all, and then totally randomly after some time that whole process will start described above, except when I press power it shuts right back off and nothing will start it. One time out of a hundred the stereo will stay on for like five minutes and then just shut off.. Any suggestions?

The next time it does that. Pull the radio out and look for 12 volts all the time on the orange/black wire and 12 volts on the yellow wire ignition on. The black wire will be the ground. If you have 12 volts as discribed, then you have a problem with the radio.
