Car Audio selection Help
I am redoing the interior of my 1986 Trans Am right now and I came to the conclusion rather than get everything recoverd and take everything appart now woulb be a good time to redo the antique 25 year old audio system. Here is what I am looking for out of my audio system. I am looking for clear and good sound. I don't really crank my audio and im not really the kind of guy who goes for the subwoofers rattling the whole car. I enjoy detail of my music and clarity with some bass mixed in. I am thinking about a Kenwood KDC-448U for the head unit. Is this a good unit for what I am after? I am also not against an amp. I will be replacing the wire and the speakers as well. I am trying to keep the factory locations and sizes. I am not trying to build a performance sound system for compititions or anything like that. I just want to enjoy my audio in my DD as I go cruising down the road with my windows down.
Thanks for your help and suggestions BTW i am trying to stay with good quality products like Pioneer, Apline, Kenwood, ect and budget is not a problem. ( I beleive in doing it right the first time even if it means I have to save a little more and wait a little longer to get the good stuff...)

Re: Car Audio selection Help
So I did some more digging around and here is what I found for speakers...Pioner TS-A6964R's for the rears and Some Alpine SPS-406's for the front dash speakers. With these mated up to the Kenwood KDC-448U would buying an amplifier give me any benifits or would it do anything for the sound quality? Do you guys think this setup will give me what I am looking for? And what kind of wire should I run?

If you like to stay with a stock Delco modified with iPod jack they have some on eBay.That is what I'm doing. Also I saw a GPS/TV/DVD/Bluetooth/iPhone/USB...for $200.

It's not hard to convert to dual din. I considered it. I would do it with almost any other car but want to keep the stock look in my IROC.

Re: Car Audio selection Help
So on this set up would it be worth buying an amplifier? How many watts? And how many channels?

Re: Car Audio selection Help
I just put in a Kenwood head unit and some Alpine speakers. I put SPS-406 4x6 speakers in the front and SPR-69 6x9s in the rear. Everything fit easily, but I have a Camaro which apparently has a little more room in the dash. Crutchfield says the SPS-406 wont fit, but it had plenty of room. Just use the thicker plastic mounting plate that comes with them.
I bought harness adapters from BB, but they only sell one type. The front speakers are factory wired as reverse polarity compared to the rears so I had to rewire the harness adapters. Crutchfield will send you both adapters for free if you buy your speakers from them.
Speaker polarity/phasing is everything. Get it right or suffer with awful sound quality.

How do you like your speakers and set up afremont? Do you get good quallity out of it? I have heard only good things about those spr-69's I am really tempted to get a pair. How are the SPS-406's? Are you also running an amplifier?

Re: Car Audio selection Help
I like it allot. I don't have an amplifier, so it's not quite as loud as I'd like it to be, but it's plenty loud enough for everyone else that rides with me. It could use some deeper (lower frequency) bass response, but that's more a problem of the car's design and me not having a sub. I was spoiled by my old impala as it could develop really low frequencies inside the huge cabin. Putting the speakers in the sail panels really hurts bass development as they are too close to your head, plus they face each other. My only complaints are with the design of the car, not the radio or speakers. It certainly sounds allot better than the factory setup did.
