whats your take on this?

i plan on upgrading the sound system that i have in my 85 this winter when i store it. and as of right now i want to put polk dxi speakers in the car. i plan on putting polk dxi460 in the front for the dash, and i want to put dix690 in the rear, the thing is when i go to crutchfield and outfit my car the sites saying that they wouldnt fit even thought the dxi690 are 6x9 speakers which im being told that, thats the correct speaker size. my 85 firebird does have power windows does that make any difference? and would it be alright if i went and bought them. id post a link to the speakers but im not sure if thats agianst the forums policy.....

Re: whats your take on this?

they might have too much depth to fit in the stock location.. you could use some kind of spacer to help if thats the case

some(most?)thidgens have a housing of soft fiberglass behind the sail panel 6x9s,limiting depth-remove the fiberglass housing and there is much more room, over 4"IIRC.On the front side of the speaker, the trim ring around the cone can interfere with instalation on the factory grill panel if the trim ring sticks up more than about 5/16"-the ring can usually be trimmed down if needed.

well i wont lie, im very new when it comes to the audio the only thing that iv bought and installed so far is an aftermarket radio deck. um i currently just want polk audio because a few of my friends have them installed and i think that they sound pretty good. if you guys have any other opionouns in what speakers i should get im more than welcomed to hear. im just want something moderatly and not too expansive

* i was also thinking putting 2 way speakers in the front and 3-way in the rear

Re: whats your take on this?

The problem probably isn't the 6x9s, it's the dash speakers. If the car was originally equipped with smaller speakers in the back, get a set of the 6x9 plates out of a junkyard car and bolt them in (4 screws hold the plate to the body behind the sail trim). However, I haven't seen very many 4x6s that won't have the magnet interfere with mounting into the dash on the driver's side. Only pair I had that actually fit there was a pair of Sony's, and they had small magnets. Problem with the driver's side mount is that the magnet sits against the dash cluster as well as the cluster support. Some have modified them with heat guns or just plain butchering, but I went and found speakers that fit.

Power windows has nothing to do with replacing the stock speakers unless you plan on adding speakers to the doors in addition to the stock mounting locations. Everything attached there either runs under the dash lip (under the windshield where the dash's upper supports bolt to) or under the carpet.

Re: whats your take on this?

I mounted a 4x6 polk today with 1/2 inch spacers, it was a tight fit under the dash but no cutting required and there is no visible "bump" in the dash pad that fit right up the way it was supposed to.

Re: whats your take on this?

I'm not worried about the 4x6 it's other 6x9 speakers size, most places are saying that, that' speaker suze won't fit and to get a 6 and a half but I thought the rear came stock with 6x9 so I'm confused

Re: whats your take on this?

I used to install for best buy and used the polk Dxi plate 4x6s in these cars before. Sound good! I would run into clearance issues when putting them in a g body with the removable speaker grille on the dash.
