Aux port near gas cap??

I was tracing a 3.5mm stereo plug from the radio area and it led to the driver side wheel well where a small hole was drilled to fit an aux port near the gas cap.

Obviously this is not factory, has anyone seen something like this? I couldn't imagine why the original owner would need to connect an mp3 player outside the car, and of all places near the gas cap.

I'd like to know before I remove this random connection and patch up the holes.

Sounds like the dumbest thing ever. Couldn't possibly have a legit purpose. Where does the other end go? Is it actually plugged into stereo?

I agree pretty stupid. The other end is a stereo plug mini jack which is dangling freely in the radio console. I would have to assume that at some point it was plugged into an older headunit with an aux port on the back.

I never even noticed the input near the gas cap until I was doing some wire clean up in the interior trying to fix a ground loop noise.

I'm going to go ahead and get rid of it now that I know for certain it serves no purpose at all.

I bet he had it there for like bon fires and stuff like that, he could plug the MP3 palyer into it and still contorl the music outside the car, kinda neat idea I guess, but dumb at the sametime. I would for sure get rid of it.

definitely for outdoor parties. no matter how dumb you guys think it is, with subs in the back and the hatch up, these cars make a nice stereo for any outdoor occasion. back it up to a fire, sit on the bumper with some beer blastin some country music. its pretty good. i have a long 3.5m cord that runs out the windows and such

true indeed, but he could have easily went to radio shack and got a 50 foot cord and accomplished the same thing without drilling silly holes near gas tanks. I've found a bunch of other random hack jobs in my car, something tells me that this won't be the last thing I have to fix.
