1983 Trans Am radio not functioning properly
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, and new to the 3rd Gen F-Body. Basically, I have one question regarding my radio. (I did some searching, and found nothing really the same as my problem). The radio, presumably stock, turns on, but doesn't play anything. The display will show a number that changes every once and a while when the car is started. When the tune/ fade **** is turned, nothing occurs. Same with the scan and seek buttons. When the power button is depressed (One would assume that a button pressed in is 'on') it completely powers down. When the button is raised, the radio powers on. I have gotten no audio feedback from the unit, regardless of what I do. I pulled it out, checked to make sure all wires are making contact, and everything checked out. I'm stumped, and if anyone has any help to give, it is greatly appreciated. If any pictures are needed, let me know. I'm on mobile, so it wont let me attach anything.
Thanks in advance,
Robert

Re: 1983 Trans Am radio not functioning properly
Robert,
There are many things that go wrong with these radios. It could be as simple as a bad power button. Most likely it's bad (cold) solder joints. Could be a bad trasistor, or bad capacitors. However, I believe the 83 radios had the older style amp board which did not suffer from bad capacitors like the ones from mid 84 and up. It's hard to tell with out seeing the radio and putting a meter on it. If it's a project you are willing to tackle you can probably find a manual for your radio here.

If you take it apart and are able to post pictures, there are few of us on here who can show you where to start.

Alright, I'll see if I can get it out within the next day or two and tear it down. Now I have to find my meter... I'll get pictures as soon as possible. Thanks.

Re: 1983 Trans Am radio not functioning properly
Some people here repair them. I replaced mine with an aftermarket radio, a Kenwood HD radio with USB/AUX and CD player. No regrets at all. You guys can keep your fixed Delcos, while I jam to HD. Why bother fiddle farting around? I kept the dud stock radio just so I could have the original (although non working) radio to go along with the car.

I have no objections to putting in a modern radio (other than it would look really odd). But if I can fix my stock radio, it beats blowing more money. I've already put quite a bit into this '83, so I'm saving pennies wherever I can. Lol.
