I have one with an aux input I bought from a member here that does not work, and the radio needs some work and new lights. I would love to find someone who would do it.
When I bought my IROC it had a correct RPO radio with an aux port. It began to cut out and lose power when driving so what I did was remove it, take it to the GM dealer where I work, and they sent it to the repair company who repairs clusters, radios, etc. Of course I only paid cost, but they went through it, made sure the aux worked, replaced any buttons and lights that were required, and shipped it back. My cost was $110.00 Cdn. So I would image if you went to your local GM dealer and asked they should be able to do this for you!

Pretty certain that dealers can't offer service anymore. My dealer sent one of my GTAs radios to the facility in DFW and they returned it saying it was too old.

There are still plenty of places out there that will repair these radios. I have amassed a ton of parts over the past few years, so I usually have everything on had to fix them. What I do not have, I can order from some of the large repair shops.

Funny you mention that. When I got my radio back there was a note on it that said, "Neil, here's an oldie for repair" haha. It must depend on the repair center they use. Just thought I'd try to help with my experiences.

If you find a local stereo repair shop that has parts, go for it, but my local one said they're no longer available. I would have taken 84TA up on it long ago, except the shipping to and from Canada makes it prohibitive. My options are buy the parts from him and attempt it myself or find a used stereo.
Can you give a ballpark figure of the cost to completely go through an ETR head unit with cassette along with aux input install. I have been quoted over $300 to refurb my radio. I know that you can't really know the cost until you evaluate the unit, but are we talking $150, or $200, or more?

I've never had one cost more than $150 and the required a complete rebuild and replacement of several bad components. I'm not doing this to make a ton of $$$. I enjoy working on the radios and charge to cover my cost of parts, equipment and time.

Hi Guys, now that winter is hopefully over I can start working on the Trans-Am. I have been wondering who I could send the deck out to. It's a 1988 AM/FM cassette unit with the EQ. If you are interested in doing the job, let me know. I'll be posting about the speakers, the 5 inch sub. drivers I pulled out today have dust for surrounds now. Thanks, RonM.
I have cleared my backlog and I am accepting units again for repair if anyone is interested.
84TA, I'll be removing my head unit, kick panel amps/speakers and rear deck amp/speakers today. I hope to get them shipped to you today as well. I'm still not 100% on the rear deck speaker/amp removal. Do I simply remove the bright screws which are on the perimeter of enclosure (see picture), will the wiring just disconnect from the plastic enclosure?
he has it set so that when you connect your phone or iPod. It just cuts out the radio much like an cassette. I just got mine done by him.
t/aws, I'm having a cable installed in my radio by 84ta as well. How did you route the new aux cable from the radio out to the console? Did you tuck it under and along the side of the console? Did you route it down the middle and under the console to the center storage compartment? Do you have any pics? Thanks
took my console apart and put it next to the cig, lighter. I drilled a hole and screwed it in. (Also used some super glue jusr in case.) Also wrapped the lighter in electrical tape so it would not interfere with the aux.
I like that he used a cable for the aux and didn't drill the face (like too many others I've seen).
I agree, I didn't want the radio or my console butchered up so I just run the cable out the side of the console and plug in. No drilling required and my car stays in tact.

*84TA that's awesome that you do this! I was batting around a wild idea in my head thinking it would be cool to take a factory housing and put stealth equipment in it somehow so that one had all the modern goodies.
After all the good reviews I first sent my radio to Matt at the beginning of May for repairs and AUX addition. I still have yet to receive the radio back.

I was in contact with Matt just three weeks ago. I sent him one of my Bose kick panels back in late May or early June which he had originally worked on in the spring. Matt repaired the item at no cost and even paid the shipping back to me. He does these repairs on the side and is sometimes called away with his regular work for weeks at a time. I'm sure he will get back to you as soon as he is able.

Matt's a pilot and can be called in to work with very short notice as he did on the day I picked up my radio. I would expect he'll be back in touch with you shortly. It's not a business opportunity for him here with the little he charges for the work - it's more of a hobby & a great service for us.

I knew when I sent him my radio back in May that he was behind and her wouldn't be able to get to mine for a few weeks. That I didn't mind.
IMO, the problems lies in his communication, or lack thereof. I can't count the number of times he said he would get to it next week, or have it done at a certain time, only to have weeks pass by without a peep. I was always the one asking him for an update.
I even sent him a message 2 weeks ago, just asking for the radio back even if he can't repair it, with no response even though he has logged in since that time.
It's looking less and less likely that I will get my radio back.
Matt's a stand up guy. He did all of my speakers and radio in my 1992 z28 Bose setup this spring. Never got a chance to post on here as a follow up to his work but it's awesome! Sounded brand new and I was very impressed.
Now better than the original. Now it can:
- Play CDs,
- play USB thumbdrives with MP3's stored on it
- play MP3 players and other devices connected to it via AUX
- receive HD radio broadcasts.
- Bluetooth ready
