Why?

Why do people feel the need to have stereo systems in their f-body that hits 200+ dB, has 55 different speakers (25 of them subs), no back seat (for the subs), no passenger seat (for the amps), 9 batteries, along with a zillion other things?

I want to be able to hear my music, not be vaporized by it.

Why do people feel the need to have engines in their f-body that runs 11 second 1/4s, has 55 different engine mods (25 of them exhaust), no back seat (for the weight savings), no passenger seat (for the weight savings), 9lb superchargers, along with a zillion other things?
I want to be able to get where I'm going, not be killed by it.

Sound familiar? Everybody has their passions. Any time you can't understand why people are driven by their passions, try to compare it to your interests in your ride.

Ah, Jim...I see where you're coming from, but what type of car is the f-body? Would you not agree it is primarily a sports car? As a sports car, the f-body should appeal to those who feel they need speed and power and these folks rightly purchase a thirdgen.

Hmmm
thats an interesting point. It could be me but it seems that your taste change with time. What i mean is it seems a person in high school would prefer to have the loudest system that makes peoples ears bleed.

Around 20 or so it seems like the major bass pounding car doesnt seem that cool anymore (perhaps due to lack of hearing). I am changing my system around so that it weighs less but will still have a nice subtle bass sound INSIDE the car with a bass tube.

just ask yourself this question...

if i had extra money, what the f*ck would i spend it on ?

and if you can answer it, then ask yourself this question...WHY do i want to buy it?

its what people like...if they like car stereo's, and camaro's, they will put one in it...if they have a geo storm, they will put one in it...just cuz its a Camaro/sports car doesnt mean you can put a stereo in it...

i mean, how many women/older ladies you see drivin new TA's and such, i mean, like they race or anything =)

it all boils down to your likes and hobbies...

at 200+ db is perfect so after you lose your hearing the feeling of the vibration makes up for the loss of sound

Different folks, different strokes.

Personally, my goal is not to make my car so fast that it won't be streetable. But, I would like more power than it has right now. I've set my high-water mark for high 11's, hopefully naturally aspirated on a carbed 400 sbc and a 9-bolt build up; already did the tranny.
Likewise, i'd like a better stereo, not so much so that it rattles windows and body panels, but something that will give full-sounding frequency response to my rock 'n roll & heavy metal; basically not competition grade, but not lame either.

There's probably a few people reading this right now thinking "Hell, I can do better than him!" Well, more power to ya, glad you have the motivation. Or maybe "What's he thinking, he's building a suicide machine!"
Well, I just happen to like getting pinned to the seat when the ***** are to the wall. But my plans are good enough for me. Yeah, i'll wind up spending well around $5K to build my new engine and rearend, then about $800-$1K for the stereo. And I still won't have the fastest car in town, and I won't ever hit the 100+db mark. But like I said, it'll be good enough for me and that's all that matters. (However I may go NOS incase the 'imps' keep getting too close!! )

I guess the same question could be asked of Drag Racers. Now you say that the F-body is performance car, and I'll give you that, but on the other hand Cavalier's and Festivas and Civic's arent' what one would normally classify as performance cars, but you see pro-street cavie's and Festiva's all the time. Why? because they are light. So if you apply that same logic to the F-car, we put systems in because they are hatchbacks, and hatches tend to hit a little harder than coupes or sedans, and if we can hit almost as hard as an SUV, and be faster than other hatchbacks, that makes our cars better all-around performers.

I personally am not someone who just bangs the heck out of my subs. Yeah, you may be able to hear me coming a block or two away, but you will hear it word for word, not just the bass. I am big into sound quality.

What I hate seeing is someone who spends big money restoring a hot-rod and puts a Jensen or Audiovox radio in it. Now that is tacky.

Just my $.02 I guess

Chris

I just had to correct you guys ....

(1) It's impossible to hit 200+ db

(2) It's VERY easy to hit 100 db

To each their own. I used to have a huge system in another car and it was fun. Getting all the high quality components did something to me that was unexpected. I liked listening to the highs more than the bass. The system I'm building now will be set up for sound quality but still have enough power to pound when I want it to. My one year old doesn't need to have his head rattled around all of the time. I also have a 350 going in that is hitting right around 400HP. My point..these cars can be a ton of fun all around. I like seeing all of us have such different cars. It would boring to see the same thing all of the time. Build it loud soft slow or fast but just have fun building it.
