Hey 83, don't rip on him. I don't believe you can get hand laid fiberglass panels made anywhere for $50.. The materials alone are more than that (I've looked into making my own).. It's not like the guy is making a fortune off of them, and the only other alternatives cost $200 (qlogic) or custom shops (more than $200).. So give him a break, it makes you look ignorant as hell saying his product is a rip off.. Not to mention nobody asked what you thought of them..

I'm thinking there is a tone of sarcasm in Slow83's post.

Anyway, it does cost right about $30 to $50 in materials, depending if I have stuff in stock or have to order and pay the shipping. It also takes me about 2 hours a day, for 4 to 5 days o make them (gotta let the layers of glass cure inbetween, that's why I can't just bang em out in one day.)

With the regular price of $150, I think they are well worth it and I profit just over $100 a set, which I think is fair considering the time is takes to make them. With this deal , I'm hoping to get several orders that I can do all at once to still make a little $$.

This is not my "day job", just a little something i do to support my audio habit.

I greatly appreciate each and every chance I get to sell a set.

Just got back from Car Toys with my new Infinity Kappa 6x9's and 4x6's, was going to get a set of kick panels but they wanted $150 each, I was like wow thats expensive then the intaler guy goes, I'll make ya custom set for $600 ish, I settled on the 4x6's for the dash, I've got some 5" pioneers just waitin for a set of kick panels and at a $100 bucks even the ol lady cant yell, then I'll need a new amp, hmmm decisions decisions, thats a great deal ya got, they look good to.

wow very nice!!! i would like to order a set for my project camaro but i'm not sure if I should. I plan to do the K1 Interior swap and im not sure if it is going to modify my kickpanels. I'll need to contact them to see if your kickpanels will fit after the conversion. They look great!!!

even $150 (orginal price) is a deal for these kick panels. I have a pair and I can vouch for them. The only other mass quantity kick panels are the q-forms and they are cheap plastic molds. These kick panels are MUCH stronger and they are a GREAT price. IMO any price lower then this cant even be close to the quality of dj's kicks.

People happily pay $600+ for custom kicks every day at good shops. Kicks like DJ's are worth at least $200-250 if they don't have a sealed chamber, $400 or more if they do have a sealed chamber. If your buddy is making them as cheap as you say, then he's an idiot that's going to put himself out of business.

Ok, so these are not ultimate competition quality kickpanels. Those involve critical listning of the speakers at various angles to find the best image (which is different for each speaker), and things like foot room become less important that perfect imaging and staging. Those are the kinds of kickpanels you will pay over $600 for .

These are designed to be a compramise between being a better solution for imaging and staging, while still maintaining comfortable foot room for daily driving. Heck, I would not even hesitate to compete with them in an amature class event. They are not sealed, but that way speakers of different depts can fit in. I try feel that these are superior to Q-forms in several ways, which sell for $200.

Just to give you an idea of the work that goes into these, I'll break it down:

1) take stock kickpanel, and screw my custom speaker pod template to it from behind. This is a 7" diamater piece of mdf, attatched to a 2x4, with a 2" diamater piece attatched at the bottom for the tweeter. The 7" piece has a raised lip so the grill will sit flush in.

2) once this template is attatched, cover it in aluminum foil so the resin does not stick to the mdf

3) cover whole thing in fleece, and apply resin to get basic shape. Let dry overnight.
-This phase takes me about an hour of time to make sure the fleece is as smooth as possible so the finished product looks good.

4) once cure, cut mdf template out of kickpanel from behind and remove.

5) add some chop mat to fill in the small corners, and strips of fiberglass on larger areas to reinforce the fleece (fleece is very brittle and weak). Apply resin and let dry over night.
-again, about an hour of work for each set with the above step

6) add more fiberglass and resin, let dry overnight

7) if the kickpanel is strong enought at this point, cut the hole for the woofer and tweeter. Use bondo on and depressions that the fleeced formed (normally very little), and sand the whole thing smooth.

8) Upholster with tweed, this normally takes up to an hour per set, sometimes more to get all the wrinkles out and to have a nice finished product.

9) make grills, using a metal grill I have as a template, I heat up some plastic grill material and form it to the shape I need. I like this plastic grill because it is flexible, so will give when a foot happens to bump it, instead of breaking, and it is much cheaper for me to make them then it is to buy metal grills that will fit in the recess (keeping my cost lower, and the prices). It takes me about 30 minutes to make a pair of grills.

So there you have it, all that for $60 profit. I don't do it to pay the bills, and I count on the bulk of sales like this make it worth it for me. This is basically my toy money.

So if someone else is making them for $50 a set, than more power to him. I would like to see pics though, to see what kind they are.

I really apreciate all the orders I have recieved so far and hope a few more step up before friday. Once I have everyones $$, I will order the materials I need and begin construction. Everone should have there kicks in 3 weeks or so.

I have no idea who DJSexay is and have no interest in promoting his product. What I can tell you is that if you want very high quality kicks then pay someone at least $400 to make them. Or, spend many hours learning how to work with fiberglass, planning/designing your kicks, and actually building them. Time is money. You'll also need tools and supplies and will pobably screw up the first set and have to make a second. If all you need is a basic set of kicks, then $100 is very, VERY reasonable.

If I order a set, would you mind if I kept my original kickpanels, and swallow the $30? Also what color do you think would go best with the red interior of a 92 RS, with I believe some interior option (has two tones or red fabric, with embroidered "CAMARO" on the seats)?

If you want to pay the $30, and keep your kicks, that's fine.

As for color, I have a detailed color chart on my site, www.lachernet.com/kickpanels. For a brighter red, go with scarlet. Wine is more of a maroon color, and garnet is a darker red with a little light red and real dark red mixed in. Gred Granite is a red and grey criss-cross design. It all depends on the total look you are looking for.

Also, in my old firebird, I tweeded the door sill plates to match the tweed of the kickpanels. Very easy to do with 3M Super 77 spray glue. I will sell tweed by the yard to anyone who orders kickpanels if they want some to cover other interior pieces.

Oh hey just a curiosity thing, how are your kicks held in place? Because it seems that the screw(s) that go through the middle of the original kicks cant be used anymore.

correct, they screw in the front, like the factory, but that is it. They wedge up against the under dash panel, and they are sturdy enough to stay put. The factory ones flap around from being so thin with out the extra screw.

If you are still concerned with mounting, a standard radio back strap from behind will be more than adequat to hold them in place.
