Sub placement-non thirdgen
Hi, I'm looking to do the basic upgrades to my '97 Escorts (winter beater) sound system myself. I know some of the basics, but I figure I'll learn as I go along.
One thing I can't figure out, if why subs are placed pointing toward the rear of the car, in a trunk. Why not mount them so they point into the pass. compartment, up against the rear seat back? Bass has a tendancy to go through material (rather than bounce, like high frequencies do), so I'm thinking the guy in the car behind you will end up hearing it better.

Well, the reason they aim at the back is because its louder for you that way. The sound deflects of the back hatch and window, toawrds you. Pointing a sub at you just fires into the back seat which is all coushin and fabric, which is a natural muffler. Firing the subs at the back in a sense cause the back to act as a big sub box. I had a ford ranger x-tended cab and at first the subs were aimed foward, then i turned them around and the bass was harder and louder. I dont always understand it fully either but it works.

Without a doubt, firing the subs at the rear of any car makes them sound better, and louder. In a hatchback, the rear is like a megaphone. If you fire them at the front, and stand in front of your car, then stand behind your car, standin behind it will be louder, and cleaner. Think that's because your closer to the subs? No, that's not it. Fire them towards the rear, and walk around the car again, they sound better from the front. Don't belive me? Try it. And inside the car, it sounds better when firing them towards the rear too.

Not that I really care, but as you are installing in an Escort, you should check out www.escortgt.com. It is the website for the Ford Escort Owners Association. Message board similar to this one.

Yeah, actually, I was a member @ escortracing.com, and they have a message board. I got pretty fed up with them, tho. The search engine they use to search the archives SUX, and the members won't answer questions. I've never had problems with you guys, and it was more of a theoretical question, anyways.
Thanks for the answers so far.
