Reasonable price to have a CC Quadrajet rebuilt

I just got my new 350 running a week or so ago. It doesnt want to run right especially at idle I have to hold the peddle clear to the floor to get it to start. The last time I started it it seemed better but I still had to hold the peddle to the floor for it to start. It seems to be related to throttle position. It seems to almost bog if I give it gas to quick(car in park not moving). I dont know how bad it is because I cant drive the car yet because I only have headers on it and such but it just isnt quite right. Also When setting the timing it seemed to try to die when I got it close to where it was supposed to be(4 wire connector was disconnected). The one time it seemed to run better was after I finally got the timing set and the wire plugged back in but I think the carb is not right. I also replaced the gaskets in the carb and the tps. Could someone tell me what the 2 thin hollow rods(not metering rods) that hang down out of the top of piece of the carb when taken apart do? They fell out when I took it apart and I am not sure if I put them in the correct spot but think I did.

Anyway, I am going to have a guy look at it locally and see what he will charge for a rebuild. I was curious on what would be a fair price. Also, my cousin said that he thinks that the throttle shaft busshing or something was worn out. Would this be included in a rebuild. I have considered jet performance and just emailed them about the price but while searcing old posts saw anywhere from 250-500 from jet and wondered if anyone could tell me of experiences with their carbs and how much they actually charge. Someone also mentioned The Carb Shop. Does someone have their website handy? Any experiences/price from them?

Thanks

Ben

About $100 is fair.

Thanks for the reply. Has anyone had experience with Jet or The Carb Shop?

Their stuff is expensive, about $400.

Ok, I got a reply from jet. They said that stage one is basically a stock rebuild and costs 265 and that stage 2 changes stuff like jets and secondary metering rods for your aplication. I already have dr rods and b hanger so should I just go with stage 1? From what I have seen you either cant or dont need to change the jets in the computer controlled quadrajets. Is this true? Hopefully I will find out today how much that guy wants localy. So if it will be basically a stock rebuiild plus rods and hanger should I just have it done locally since I already have aftermarket rods and hanger?

Thanks

Ben

If I were you, I'd just get it done locally, I'm sure you can find SOMEONE knowledgable to do it. I got mine totally rebuilt for $50 and it runs perfectly.

Just my opinion tho, of course.

Actually, I did find someone who would do it locally for pretty cheap, but my carb has too much throttle shaft play. I posted an ad on the clasifieds for a rebuildable or usable one, and I got several replies but I found one that is in really good shape and works real well as is.

When you time a ccc GM there is a single brown wire that you disconnect. This dumps the computer into timing mode. When you disconnected the four wire it took away all readings that were going to the ecm. At that point it can't tell what RPM it's at and it will not run very well, especially off-idle. You might want to start overand you may be happier with the result. Josh

You can have shaft bushings added to either the Jet Stage I or Stage II rebuild.

As for timing, there is no "single brown wire" on the CC q-jet. You have to disconnect the flat 4-wire connector to set the base timing.

Yes, I did disconnect that wire, but my q jet was shot. I even had it looked at by a guy a friend knows and he said that the throttle shaft was worn and it was in need of a rebuild. Well, I found another one but havnt got it yet. We'll see when I get it how it does.

Hey man, be carefully of those 2 thin hollow rods. Those are just air bleeds but you said you've had them fall out when taking the horn off, I've had them fall down and get under the float.

Does anyone go to the parts store these days?? You know AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts has a really good Haynes Techbook ok this carb.

LOL Paying someone to rebuild it?? LOL

The only thing I've ever paid anyone to do is put new tires on and rebuild transmission.

And if your going to pay 250 your better off getting a new carb.

We get 3.2 hours labor including R&R and adjust on car at $80.00 an hour plus kit and float. I do a lot of them actually. And btw the tubes are the secondary fuel pick up tubes. They supply fuel to the secondary's not air bleeds...

If you build one yourself having knowledge on how to make power with one would be a benifit. The rich mixture adjustment gives you the ability to do jetting with the turn of a screw instead of doing replacement jetting in the primary circuit. However these things won't ever run like a good old holley.

I bought a non-CC carb from JET, and I am very happy with it. It was $400 with shipping but is was worth it in my opinion.

Didn't you say you were running open headers? An o2 sensor will run way lean because ambient air will have too much oxygen around it, which may indeed be your problem.

This is a kind of old thread. The carb was screwed up pretty bad, and I was trying to set up the old style timing tab, and the balancer was the newer style. It runs good now. There are sound files in my sig. It has exhaust on it now too. I put duals with h pipe and bullet mufflers on. I also installed a heated O2 sensor last weekend also.
