Being rather ignorant of carbs, i have a question about chokes. Do i actually need a choke on the carb? Im looking at buying a 650 dp off a gentleman but he doesnt run a choke. My car sees daily duty. somebody help me out. thanks

You don't need a choke, but for a daily driver in cold weather you'll really, really want one.

well i put the car up in the winter... can i get away without if for the summer and worry about it when fall approaches?

i have a freshly rebuilt holley 650 model 4165 list 6210 that has a manual choke ready to go. i can get pictures if you want.

You can probably get away without it in summer. You just have to feather the throttle to keep it running after a cold start without a choke.

if it's warm i don't see the need for a choke as much as around here in the midwest in winter. My camaro doesn't run a choke since it's a warm weather car and i'm used to having to wait a minute before driving off.

and you can always get a choke kit for 20 bucks from summit if you really want one.

A choke kit will convert a manual choke to electric, but it won't help if the choke plate has been removed or if the carb has no choke at all.

If you just driving it in the summer, I'd say go for it. You may have to hold the pedal down a little bit during cold starts, but in the summer cars warm up pretty quick. If it gives you problems just get a manual choke for it for like $20 and that will help you with the cold starts.

yeah i am going to sell it. my 350 plans with a different motor has been cancelled because a friend bought my old block. i am looking at around 175 or so. i will be able to snap a few photos on thursday. my sister took my camera with them on vacation.

Anyone who has removed a choke from a carb probably isn't the sort of person you want to buy a carb from let alone anything else. It shows a certain lack of brains to remove a choke plate, as it causes any engine in any climate trouble.

Yes I can live without it but it isn't good to miss it. If anyone knows where I can get a replacement choke plate for a holley 4160 carb then I will be the next person to buy one.....

There's nothing wrong with removing the choke. It's a common modification to increase airflow through the primaries on racing carbs, or on cars that only see summer use. Holley and Demon have entire series of carbs that not only don't have chokes, but don't even have choke towers in the castings.

yes, get the right carb but don't screw up the wrong carb!

No choke has no place on anything but a top end dragster. And certainly not on a 650cfm or the like carb. If you need the extra airflow get a 700, 750 +++ carb, don't be stupid and remove the choke plate from a low spec carb!

mine has one... don't bother using it... car has fired right up on 3 pumps in 10* weather... yeah you have to sit there and either drive it, or give it some gas, but it runs fine...

Iroc-si I have a holley 600 VS sitting in my shed collecting dust.. (4160) have a new one on my engine also, removed the choke.. I live in florida and even in the winter its not that cold.. even with choke I cant drive my car so I dont see the point... also it would stick and **** me off so i removed it. anyway I would sell you the choke plate for whatever it costs to ship it and like a dollar.. hell i'll send you the whole linkage and everything..

I was having problems with my 305H and it turned out to be the choke seized in a full-choke position. It caused the engine to flood after 10 minutes of driving finally. So now, i cheaped out for the moment and just had the mechanic leave it open to a normal running position. And even these cold canadian winter mornings she'll still start, albeit with a good bit of cranking and pressing the pedal for 10 seconds every 10 seconds. I just have to make sure my batterys good and strong.
