tpi to carb swap wiring q's
Well im going to go to a carb... Im trying to keep as much of the computer harness together as possible and im kinda seperating the chasis harness from computer harness. Im lost on this wiring stuff bear with me lol
first question
on the alternator plug, what do i do with the Tan w/white wire. It seems like it goes to the computer?
2nd q
there is a tan w/white wire that connects to plug above the oil filter and it seems to run to also run to the computer, what do i do with that?
3rd q
a small orange wire which is connected to the same plug above the oil filter connects to 7 large orange wires what should i do with that?
Im lost at this wiring thing.... any help/pics would be awsome thanks!

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
I searched through the archives and studied a wiring diagram i figured out a little more.
first q
on the alternator plug, the Tan w/white wire should go to another wire that gets 12 volts when the key is in on position?
2nd q
there is a tan w/white wire that connects to the fuel pump, Could i just wire up a switch w/a fuse to the orange (HOT) wire instead of using the stock relay? there seems to be a bunch of posts with diff ways to do it, im going for as simple as possible.
hopefully that makes sense lol[/QUOTE]

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
so i should wire it like this?
stuff in grey is not there... well the ALDL is still there. the orange would have to go to a constant 12v source right?

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
...ok that dont help at all, lol ok this is what i got. I was trying to not cut up the factory tpi harness. Ill give more info maybe this will help.
On a factory tpi computer harness there is a junction of 5 tan wires with a white stripe on them, according to my wiring diagram one goes to the; in tank unit, fuel pump relay, fuel pump switch, maff relay, and the ECU.
On my charging system diagram theres a tan (or brown) wire from the alternator (which i cut). According to the diagram it goes to the instrament panel and ignition. The 2 wire connector that conects to MY alternator is not plain tan, its tan w/ white.
I removed the tpi harness and cut a few wires right before they pass through on the firewall on the drivers side.
-A tan w/white (which according to the first diagram goes to the Fuel tank unit)
-A red wire that went to the fuel pump relay
-A purple wire that goes to the tranny for the tcc lock up dealy (ill worry about wiring that later)
-A pink w/black one (which i think goes to the fuse block)
this is where i get really confused, the sensor above the oil filter (Fuel pump switch?) has 3 wires running to it not 2 like the diagram shows...
Theres an orange wire that ran to it (that wire was junctioned with 7 other orange wires so i cut it)
another tan w/ white(also cut it)
And a brown wire, the brown wire goes up and through the fire wall.
i hope this makes sense to someone...

Here is some discussion when I did mine. I don't have my prints in front of me, but what your doing sounds correct.

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
can i also use the pink w/black wire that gets 12v when the key is in the acc/on position, to power the relay and the Electric choke on the carb?
And dont the tan w/white wire comming from the alternator need that same 12v source to charge?

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
yes, and yes. I'm not completly sure about the alternator wire. I ended up changing to a 1 wire powermaster and it works great.

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
ok so i tracked that alternator wire down...
im sure it goes to the clear connector, and that connecter plugs into this
where do the wires on that connector go to? do i even need any of that?
and here is the wires i have cut and need to wire up

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
I've pretty much made the decision to yank the TPI and drop a carb on my 355.
I'm tired of all the PROM burning BS.
I want to get on with the swap as soon as the weather clears and Spring arrives.

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
did you pull the ecm yet? when I did mine I left the ecm in and the alt works fine..only electrical was hooking up a keyed 12v source to the green/white at the fuel pump relay and choke keyed 12v..both of which I found in the stock harness for the injectors. By leaving the ecm in you still get vats to disable the starter. good luck

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
I was looking at another post and that reminded me that the vats is actually another box from the ecm so be sure that is hooked up as well..plenty of good vats info on the site.

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
How about the cooling fans, TC lock up and cruise? Are they still working? Also, what is needed for the throttle/TV/cruise cables? I'm starting to think seriously about ditching the TPI and go carb. I'm an old bastard. I can tune with a timing light and a set of jets. Not BIN files and V/E tables!

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
I hooked up a switch for the tc,very easy and my colling fan doesnt want to turn on so I just wired a switch for that.Holley makes a bracket for the tv and thottle cable and an adapter for the linkage to accommidate the tv cable...I think both cost me like 35 bucks, works great. Im sure the other carbs have similar stuff. Good Luck

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
Honestly this was the easiest mod I have done to my car...
Take about 5 hours to do..
Step one remove manifold
Step 2 replace gaskets
Step 3 use RTV high temp sealant (the one that come in the box sucks and you will be wondering where all your water is coming from)
Step 4 replace with Carb manifold
Step 5 put on carb
Step 6 hook lines up from your in to a Fuel pressure regulator
Step 7 use one out line from the FPR to your carb, the other to your return line
Honestly dont mess with any of the computer bs or any of the wires its not needed.
But be aware if you do this swap your car will NEVER pass a legal smog
any questions pm me

Re: tpi to carb swap wiring q's
Hey buzzman, Do you have the part numbers for the holley bracket and linkage you used? I would much rather buy it then try to fab my own. Really dont wanna burn the trans up...
Thanks!
