searching is no help now its a thread
Ok ive wasted my time searching and reading stupid pointless threads that had nothing.to do with what I want. I have an 85 trans am 305 H.O 4bbl, now I'm going to swap to a holley 780 since I have a good one just sitting around. Now one thread I read there's was someone talking about how fantastic q-jets are. I think. there garbage. But now my question is I will be able to Rip all of my emissions since that doesnt matter here in nc also how will I install it since its not computer controlled.

Yes you can rip out all of your emissions. Although it doesn't matter in NC it is still illegal in all 50 states but that's OK, right?
Remove everything you think doesn't look right, bolt the Holley on along with a mechanical/vacuum advance distributor (your old useless one is computer controlled) then hack all the wires you don't think you need anymore off at the easiest place to get your dykes to them. Now enjoy less performance and driveability than a properly tuned and running L69.

So why do you want to use this Holley? Why would you pick it instead of a q-jet?

A few points:
1. 780 is much more than a 305 can use, even an HO. The secondaries would barely open, and the relatively large primaries would cause driveability issues.
2. You can't bolt a 780 to a stock intake manifold. You either need an adapter, or an aftermarket intake manifold.
3. You need a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor if you use anything other than the stock computer q-jet.
4. The vacuum secondaries of the 780 are a very poor choice with a T5 (although, since they won't be opening that much, maybe that won't be much of an issue - however, the driveability issues will still be there).
5. The #1 reason people think q-jets are "garbage" is because they don't understand how they work.
6. The #1 reason people have problems with q-jets is they refuse to learn how they work.
7. If you can tune a Holley, you can tune a q-jet. If you can't tune a q-jet, no way no how can you tune a Holley (especially one that is a total mismatch for your combo).
8. I've had several bad carburetors in my time, but the Holley 780 I had was without question the worst of all of them. It was brand new out of the box (one of the few new carbs I've had in all those years).
9. Whether it's an engine, carb, intake, distributor, transmission, whatever, "I have it laying around" is about the worst reason to try to use it if it isn't right for your combo.
10. I have been accused of being on Holley's payroll based on what I have said about them on this Board.
But, hey, it's your car, your money, your time. Do as you please.

Take some time, read a book on qjets(don't worry if it's about carbs nobody will call you a nerd), learn how to work the google machine on tuning q-jet carbs(risky business as everyone has opinions good and bad but take them with a grain of salt).
Most importantly ask questions and don't listen to anyone saying to discard of a certain "brand" of carburetor because its junk without further explanation.
