Choke rod/butterfly stuck wide open (pic inside)

Yesterday I turned car over, and it was very reluctant to start, almost like there was no gas inside. She started up, but at about 400 rpms. When I gave it some gas, I heard this terrible squeeky sound, but not the same sound you get when a V-belt is too tight or too loose or worn. I let it idle for a bit, then she suddenly died. I thought, hmm, maybe its the carburetor. Removed air cleaner and I found the butterfly was stuck wide open. I attempted to fiddle with the fast idle cam area in an attempt to reset the choke rod, (think thats what its called) (I circled it in red), but it only moved a little bit. I tried moving the choke rod around, but it didn't want to allow the butterfly to close either. I didn't do any tinkering with the carburetor previously, so I'm not sure how this happened. She started up fine 4 hours prior.
Did the choke or a related component break? (I removed that brass primary thing to get a better look)

It will snap closed (when cold) after the throttle is opened. The throttle will keep the cam from dropping. However I can't tell from the pick whether the cam has already dropped: What you see would be the expected position of the choke after the engine had run for a few minutes.

There is very little play on the cam if I push it down (towards the engine), but if I attempt to push it the other direction, it sticks. Immediately after starting the car up, the choke seemed to well, choke. The engine was slightly warm (having previously running it for about 10 minutes tops ...... 4 hours before this occurred).

That carb looks pretty clean. how long has it been on there?
There is no choke pull off. If it's a replacement or has been rebuilt the pull off may have been left off by mistake unless you removed it for a better pic.

Carb was rebuilt in mid July of this year, the guy let it soak in a tank of what I think was called tyme, not to be confused with thyme! He said it was some sort of acid wash that restores the original color and really cleans the old crap out. I removed the choke pulloff to take better pictures and such. I umm, removed the choke to see what the problem was and accidentally dropped the choke rod loop attachment inside the carb. That's ok though since the car is being towed off to his place tomorrow so that he can adjust the carb properly (I hope I learn something) and hopefully take it to emissions tomorrow.
