Re: carb help

If you had a computer controlled carb, then you also had a computer controlled distributor. If you swapped the carb for a Edelbrock, but didn't change the distributor to a vacuum advanced distributor, then you'll have problems. You can't swap carbs without swapping the distributor as well.

I didn't know 2nd gen cars had computer-controlled anything.

Re: carb help

Cool - learned something new.
BTW - 3rd gens had computer carbs until 1987. 1988 was first year of the TBI replacement. Not sure if there's a difference between the 1981 computer carbs and later years, but on the later years it was (and still is) the best carb setup you can get.

'81 was the only year for computer carbs in 2nd gens. As stated, the computer carb was used in 3rd gens through '87.

The '81 computer wasn't quite as good as the later 3rd gen computers, but it was okay, and the carb was fine. Replacing it with a non-computer carb was a waste of money. You lost your torque converter lock-up function in the process.

The best way to cut your losses would be to put the computer q-jet back on, fixing whatever was wrong in the process (if anything was wrong with it - if you thought you could increase power by replacing it, you were wrong). If you like spending money, then get the non-computer distributor as suggested above, and whatever kit you choose to get the torque converter lock-up function back.

Most likely the cheapest solution would be to put the computer q-jet back on (assuming you got an intake that will accept a spreadbore carb - if not, then that was another mistake). It would also be the route to take for the best power and economy.

Five7kid is correct, you did NOTHING to increase your power. Not needing to pass smog is a good thing, but that doesn't mean you HAVE to dump the CCC system. What you effectively done was reduce your milage, made a lateral move powerwise ( or actually lost some ), require more modding and money to get your combo working properly, and worst of all you've spent money ( and you're still not done spending yet ) to get you to this point.

You can dump almost all of your emmissions stuff and keep the CCC system if you want.

Not for the primaries, which is what you're running on when economy is in view.

Bottom line: No aftermarket squarebore carb will outperform a q-jet for either power or economy.
