Camshaft for a camaro

I have a question about camshafts for a carbureted engine. If I had a cabureted engine would it be eaiser to just throw in a slightly lopey cam, than it would be for a TPI or TBI. Thanks

I have the TPI

Well, what are you really after, a car that performs, or a car that sounds like it performs?

Personally, I have no taste for the latter without the former. I'll gladly take the former without the latter.

Wow, that really actually hurt my brain there for a second. LOL.

Buy a cam that suits your current goals.

Both projects are pretty involved. If you're looking for a bit more performance out of what you have, there are probably better ( and easier ) ways of getting there. Tell us what you have and what you're looking to achieve.

Re: Camshaft for a camaro

TPI is more work to put in as the intake has a few more steps to remove and install back. TBI is probably the same as the carb.

The question is - why would you want a lopey cam? The sound only?

Re: Camshaft for a camaro

A lot of guys try a different muffler and or pipes to get a cooler sound. and your money won't be wasted by getting an exhaust that breathes better

Re: Camshaft for a camaro

If all you really want is a cool sound, put a cutout on your exhaust - they are like $30 from Summit, plus whatever it costs to get it welded into your exhaust. Changing a cam just for sound alone is ALOT of expense and work just for sound. You have to tear apart the whole front end of the motor, the whole top end (except the heads themselves), all of the cooling system and AC condenser, and drop the oil pan. IMO, not worth it unless you're going to use a cam that will up the performance as well.

Now, that said... It is a little easier to do a cam swap in a carbureted engine, in that there is less complicated tuning involved after its been installed. Tune the carb, set the ignition timing, and you're done, pretty much. With EFI, you have to do all your tuning through the computer, which not everyone has the equipment for, possibly changing things like injectors as well, which can get expensive in a hurry. Same goes for tuning the ECM. The actual swap of the camshaft itself, and what much be disassembled or replaced, is basically the same between carb and EFI.

Re: Camshaft for a camaro

There are easier mods to do than a camshaft. Let's get away from that however...

For your car to run it's best, it will need some tuning after a camshaft swap. Even a tiny change in cams. Whether you have a non-computer carb, a CCC Q-jet, TBI or TPI, every single one will benefit from a tuning session.

What you have experience in is usually "easier." but most of the time, you lose mileage and drivability from a carb. And there are a whole lot of resources here with regard to tuning TBI and TPI.
