84 L69 Fuel return line

I am still finding little gems from the previous owner. The most recent is a fuel system related question.

Under my car (1984 L69 Pontiac TA) where the lines for the evap system have been disconnected and left hanging there is one that is plugged with a screw and a hose clamp. I removed to screw to see if anything came out and I noticed a lot of fuel vapor and I plugged it back up. Did my car at one point have a fuel return line?

Re: 84 L69 Fuel return line

It had 4 lines from the tank. 1 went to the "UFO" in front of the left rear spring. 1 went to the vapor canister. 2 went to the fuel pump, 1 supply and the other return.

Re: 84 L69 Fuel return line

Thanks it looks like the previous owner of my car did some alternative ethnic engineering and an attempt to make it more old school...

The "UFO" thing is the tank pressure relief valve. Basically, when you fill your tank up at the station, air pressure is released when it gets trapped by incoming fuel. There should be no fuel in this one...ever.

Do you still have your charcoal canister in the front driver side? It would be located just opposite where the battery would be from the passenger side.

Re: 84 L69 Fuel return line

This thing doesnt have a holley or a non original carb does it?

When i went back to an old school q-jet i had to block this one off, pretty much any holley running car had to aswell.

It does the previous owner installed an Edelbrock with the new motor. Although he could have just used the return Port on the mechanical pump. Either way it is plugged with no leaks and the tuning is going well. It is good to know I have a return Port for my future EFI plans

Re: 84 L69 Fuel return line

the mechanical pump even on a carbed engine will still use the return, but that evap line with the canister on it generally wont be used with an aftermarket, or an old school carb.

Yes most of them do but some don't, I need to see if my pump had a now plugged port. I swear after 5 years I still find interesting things. If it does have a return port I will probably run a soft line back to the tank.
