rebuild or get new?? qjet problems
i have an 86 camaro with a newly swapped in 350 crate motor. my engine has been stumbling for a while, the dealer recommended doing a complete carb overhaul, among other things. my dad thought it would be relatively simple to get rid of the qjet for a holley or something. i passes smog in early in the year so i wont have to pass again for about another 18 months. my question here is this:should i go ahead and get the carb rebuilt(i tried once with my dad, we replaced the gaskets and stuff but it didnt solve the problem) or should i replace the carb with something that is non-computer controlled?
and if i do switch to non-comp controlled, what else do i have to switch too, to allow it to run good?
also, what are the going rates to have a 86 q-jet carb completely rebuilt?
i also heard of some G hangers or H hangers, or something like that, that may help performance?

Daniel, if you have to deal with emission ***** then stick with the computer controlled QJet. If not, then the other stuff you have to replace basically boils down to one thing- the distributor. Just swap it for an older NON-computer controlled one and you're 95% of the way home.
One place I know of that seems to do a good job rebuilding a CC QJet (a real business) is "The Carburetor Shop" in Ontario, California (not Canada). Don't have their number with me but you can get it through information. No webpage I'm aware of.
But before you do ANYTHING with the carb remember the old mechanic's rule: IT'S ALMOST NEVER THE CARB'S FAULT. Are you SURE the carb is at fault?

a couple reasons why i think it is the carbs fault: both techs i had look at the carb say that the metereing rods in the carb are sticking. the carb has alot of miles on it, and before i swapped in a new engine the carb was fine. i just think after all these miles it could use a rebuild. do you not think so?
i have already emailed the guys at jetchip for a quote. they want 250 for a rebuild, i went to them because i saw the CAMARO PERFORMERS atricle about sean murphy at jetchip rebuilding the carb for their project camaros zz4 swap. i think 250 sounds like a good deal for a complete rebuild, do you?

I just had my Q-Jet rebuilt in Calif. I have an 86' Iroc. They charged about 260.00 with the Fed-Ex return shipping. I have done carbs myself in the past, but wanted this one done professionally, because they use solvents to completly clean it out. (not the kind you could buy for home use). I would hiighly recommend it. Matt

I have a 1984 MCss with a ZZ3 motor on the computer and it runs like a raped ape.
The computer controlled qjet will make more than enough hp for these setups. Nine times out of ten you will find a lean hesitation at 2000 rpm on full throttle.
It set mine up in 1993, did a few mods to it that wont screw with emissions and have never had any trouble with it. I can take this car to the track and run high 12's, then head up to Yosemite (10,000 feet) and never have any trouble.
Just for a test. I took off all the computer controlled items, put a holley on it and the car DID NOT run any faster.
