Id gladly take his money. Under the terms that nither the car or the funds will be sent on until the first check or MO clears with the bank. 60-90 days.

The scam can't work if you wait for it to clear first.
Which anyone with half a brain does.

Take his check for $4000

Hmmmmmm.......NO, don't even play the stooooopid game. Tell them to go F off and to go F themselves. That's why people are getting screwed over in all of this is because they believe that when that check "clears" that they have the money. That is not the case. A friend of mine played this game and he lost BIG. He waited your 60-90 days for the check to "clear" and when he shipped out his $25,000 car and send off the extra $5,000 as specified in his deal, the bank sent him a letter about how he was the victim of a fraud and the money that he thought he had, HE DIDN'T. He was out his car AND $5,000.
So don't take the stooooopid check. Just tell them to **** off and don't become the victim.

I work for the sheriff's office in my county and I would have followed thru and pressed some charges, but the state's attorney in our county who would prosecute the case is a lame SOB....... They would drop the charges and not followthru with anything

Wow...I can barely read that -- the grammer's so bad. If you're ever selling anything and get a "gut feeling" just go ahead & trust it. This E-Mail is downright scary in how weasly it looks...

the grammer is so bad because many of these scams originate from Africa and other foreign countries. On the news I saw that Nigeria is where alot of these scams come from. They'll send you a "cashiers" or "certified check" for an amount larger than the selling price, which turn out to be fake.

Its true, e-mails like that used to turn up in the UK quite some time ago, and very regularly, everything from investing in a diamond mine, to buying huge spreads of land, but always with the same bit at the end regarding payment.
Most of them originated from N Africa, and some similar ones from parts of the Soviet Union.
As long as no-one gets caught out they are quite funny in content, but a major nuisance otherwise.

Yeah.... I've recieved several offers like this before. This one was odd because he sent several emails to me and asked what seemed to be appropriate questions about the car, then all of a sudden dumps this load of crap on me. I was used to them just sending an email about buying it and the payment scam all at once. That's what I thought was so "dangerous" about this one. That and the fact that the only place that I listed the car for sale was on THESE BOARDS....so he's here lurking.....

It happenned a while back on me too. It was for a Tremec TKO, I was selling. I played along, and they never even sent me a check. They are scamming so many people, they cant even keep track of all of their victims.

One thing to watch out for too, is some of our new members, that have "0" post, and are trying to sell some big buck stuff. If you look at the threads , and profiles more closely, you can almost make a conclusion that some people are working together. For instance, a guy with no post, replying to a seller with no post. Just seems weird to me, and automatically raises a flag. I would never buy anything from a guy who has no post at all.

If you are reading something that they put up on the boards, then they have posted at least once. The counters have not worked properly since the system went down a few months ago. I agree, be wary of buying things from low posters tho.....

Thanks for the info. I thought that if you only posted somthing for sale, that it would not count as a post. Obviously it would though. What you said makes sense to me.

A guy in the UK added this bit to the end of his advert, seems its still going on worldwide:

"If you are the son of the late King Umbongo the third and you want to pay by cashier's cheque and your shipping agent will contact me about collection, feel free to sail off in the banana boat you think I arrived in.... have a nice day!"

glad I read this after all the time I have been holding my breath waiting for this guy. I had many chances to sell my car and he keeps telling me he is sending me cash and blah blah blah. I got a check from him and it was in the wrong persons name, so I sent it to the right person. now he is sending me a check and paying me the storage fee's I have had for the car and now I read this. I am disapointed, and very glad I read this thread. What really sucks is I need to sell this car to pay for the insurance on my new car. Now I am in a bind and probably going to get my new car repo'd

Just to be clear 911rsq, when you post on the classified boards you will get NO addition to your post count. Same with the "Problems" board. What brutalform said is true to the extent of post count.

Edit 2/12/2006: I recently found a thread showing what I said above is true. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=346022

Thank you for clearing that up. I have noticed that the posters on "misc third gen stuff", with their gas card scams, etc, always have a ZERO post count. Somthing just did not seem right to me. These people had become members AFTER the fact , TGO had server problems.

Basically, if you use a little common sense, and remember, that if somthing does not seem right, its not!
