Re: Rare 1986 ASC Camaro for sale

Thanks for the link

1 of 200 is a guess, I have never seen anything to the contrary nor to confirm...

The ASC GM Programs did not list the 1986 7 1985 F-cars for some reason they did list the 1987 - 1989 Firebirds, and included the 1989 Firebirds in their 1 Million cars...

interesting nonetheless...

ASC doesn't mention the Toronados or Monte Carlo conv they built in the mid '80s either. All were dealer ordered specials, just like the '85-86 Camaros & '85-89 Firebirds.

Re: Rare 1986 ASC Camaro for sale

The confusing question I have is why does ASC claim that the 1987 - 1989 Firebirds was a part of a GM production program? and not these other cars. I agree with what your saying, but I found it really interesting to see what ASC claims as a part of a partnership and what GM does not. Even in their count of 1 Million convertibles article they used the 1989 Firebirds in the count.

go fig...

My guess is that: memory gets foggy after time. Staff shuffles in and out of the company. Marketing departments don't understand the technical in-and-outs of the production. All they know is that "We kept records of these Firebirds, so they must be official." I have talked with lots and lots of company officials at many of the different coach builders (not ASC though) and keeping records were never a priority, so it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case for the non-official ASC convertibles, too. The Firebird was different because it was side-by-side with the official Camaro conversions, so they needed to keep better records. It's all speculation, though.

I bet ASC didn't record their F-body targa conversions either. See photo:

Re: Rare 1986 ASC Camaro for sale

For some reason I am skeptical to whether ASC did the conversion... I would be interested in seeing the evidence that it was an ASC job... IMHO it looks like someones "I have an idea" project... If it was a one piece Plexiglas top or something similar I would think... yeah, ok, maybe, but...
