Heater air flow help

Replacing my heater core. My car has always had a pretty poor airflow in the heat position. Blows fine through the upper vents but hardly feel any air down below in heat. While I've got it apart for the core is there anything I can check or do to help this? This is my 88 with AC.

The HVAC system uses vacuum actuated doors to direct air. It's possible one of these doors isn't moving all the way or the actuator isn't fully operational.

Might have as much to do with the speed of the blower motor as anything. I say that because I replaced my 20-year-old motor with a new one, and suddenly heating/cooling improved considerably.

Might be something like that. Even with the blower on high it doesn't sound like it's really pushing air like it should.
