Fan Shroud On An 83 Single Electric Fan?

I did a search and found a thread on this topic, but it didn't get very far.

Are single electric fan applications for 83's supposed to have a fan shroud? My non-AC car never came with one when I ordered it from the factory. Maybe AC cars had them? I did found a post that suggested that single fans didn't come with them.

I installed all original AC parts from the junkyard and it cools the interior great at highway speeds, but could use some help at idle to 35 MPH. I installed the ducting that goes between the nose openings and condenser from a late 80's Camaro. That seemed to help more with the engine cooling at highway speeds than with the AC performance.

Thanks!

Cool to see another third gen owner with a 69...

I don't think electric fans used shrouds. I bought a dual fan set up off of a late 80s car for my 82 and the dual fan setup does not use a shroud. The lip running around the circumference of the blade tips acts as an integral shroud.

Re: Fan Shroud On An 83 Single Electric Fan?

I have never seen a car without a fan shroud, electric or not.
Also my car is an 89 but has a single electirc fan.
I also replaced a fan motor on an 86 I think give or take a year that is just like mine.
I will take a pic an post mine in a min.

Well I guess I kinda lied, this is what you should have for a fan shroud. It's not a full fan shroud, but still kinda one.

I haven't had a problem out of my car other the the fuel pump so I haven't really looked it over to well yet. I have been working on things like the brakes, so I didn't actually look at much more then this first pic. My car also run about 180 once warm regardless of idle or driving.

At any rate your car should look identical or very similar.

Yep, that's exactly what I have on my 83. It's completely open on the sides like the picture.

Here's the stock setup on a '88 TPI. No shroud with the dual fans.

Re: Fan Shroud On An 83 Single Electric Fan?

I am in the process of installing a single factory fan set up now. The top of the fan kind of has a shrowd. The bottem plastic thing that the fan bolts to is more of a mount than any thing.
The sides are wide open I would have about a 1 to 1.5 inch gap if I installed the fan to factory specs.
One thing I have learned is a good fan and shrowd set up can go a very long way. I use One 16'' electric fan to cool my 1984 diesel suburban in stop and go traffic on 95'F degree days. Part of the reason I can do that is I built a fan shrowd that fits around the radiator like a glove. I know now I over did it but it was worth it.
For my camaro I am going to install that stock fan with an added aluminum side skirt with a strip of soft weather stripping for a seal that will hopefully just kiss the surface of the radiator. That stock electric fan is massive and moves tons of air, if I can make it seal and direct all that air over the radiator I will never have any cooling problems.
I am planing to add a class 1 hitch at some point soon and getting a small open trailer.
