I just recently realized my heater core is leaking anti-freeze into my passenger side. I have a new heater core and picking up new hoses later today but what about the pipes that they connect to? My father (who is a mechanic) wants to do the whole assembly at the same time to avoid something else happening.
But we cant find the pipes... any ideas??
Thanks.

Mine has AC and I didn't take the evap out. Had to take the dash apart though, fun fun fun. Anyway, I think the OP means the long metal pipes that that come between the HC and WP. Fairly certain no one makes them new. They should be reusable. Give em a visual inspection and if they're bad you might need to head over to the j-yard.
Good luck
Alex

Although my car has A/C and you can't really get to the heater core without removing the evaporator.
That is incorrect! I just did my 84 with a/c.
Simply removed lower dash hush panel, removed one piece of the
heater/ac ducting cover to expose the heater core. Removed core
retainer and RnR the core and reassembled !
Whomever told you the evaporator had to be removed also to do the
job either was clueless or was ripping you off.

100% Correct...Did mine last summer, not that hard to do, even if your fat like me. lol. And I don't know of any Extra pipes/tubes that are needed. I just removed my old core and placed new one in, put all panels back and then reconnected the hoses back on under the hood... Simple really!
Its awful funny because when I was ready to replace my core assembly I read the
Tech article instructions and thought it was crazy to remove the entire interior
heater box assembly to get at the core.
After removing the hush panel and one piece of the heater assembly box
there was the core!
I may have gotten ripped off then. I can't really do it where I live at my apartment since I can't really start taking my car apart in the driveway. Two of the shops I called though mentioned needing to remove the evaporator. Maybe the GM service manual says to do that but it isn't really needed? I'm a bit annoyed now though.
89............Correct......As far as I know the evap. comes out from the front in
the engine compartment. But I have never replaced one so someone who has
will chime in here.
Oh well........at least its fixed and working for ya!

Glad to read somebody else did it the EASY way !
It really is easy! My HAYNES Repair Manual has me ripping out the whole dash pretty much. (radio, lower panel driver side, lower panel pass side, dash pad, right side speaker, dissconnect ECM, parking brake lever grip, drop the steering wheel and column, pulling the intrument panel back/off) No F***ing Way!.....You Don't need to Do All That!
Just lower panel(pass side), heater cover, heater core shroud, and then the core itself. Not That Hard!
JamesC: That's an awesome thread/link, good info. I wished I had found that when I did my heater core last summer. I basically did the samethings, but I was just guessing at times. IF I ever do it again, I'll be much quicker. (apx. 1-1.5 hours)
