1989 Dual fan issue

I have a '89 Iroc with dual fans. I've never seen the right fan come on. I only see the left fan come on, and it only comes on at a high temp (235 deg). Too me thats a bit high, I don't want to blow any head gaskets. Once it comes on it takes a few mins to cool the motor down and by then the temp is over 245 deg, before the motor actually starts to cool itself down. Why doesn't my right fan come on? Is it shot??

1.I'd like to have that 2nd fan come on... Is the right fan shot and I have to buy a new one, or is it something else??

2.I'd like to have the left fan come on sooner then 235 deg, by then its too hot. Is there a way to make the fans come on sooner?

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

Same prob on my 89 Formula.
1. Is the pax fan good? Find out by key on engine off and grounding the wire going to the fan switch (in the head b/w #6 & #8 cyl. Hard to get to. Above the starter, pull the wire from below. I ran a temp wire from there straight to the neg battery term. When grounded the relay near the charcoal canister will click and power up the fan. If fan does not come on does it get 12v on the click? If it gets 12V then the fan is bad like mine was.

Let us know.

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

From my understanding the second fan is only there for back up in case the first fan fails and your car reaches above 220. Thats what I read somewhere?

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

Either 239* or turning the A/C on will kick on the 2nd fan. (nless something is wrong)
TTAs used a lil bit cooler 2nd fan switch 229* (I think)
Hypertech makes 2 switches that are way colder and they are used for 180* or 160* T-stats

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

It's probably too cold in Massachusetts for the passenger fan to kick on. Even with the air conditioning turned on. I just wrote up a huge post about this.

Throw a 200/185 fan switch in there. Cheap at $40. And even if that's not the problem, it's still a good thing to have.

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

I thought both fans are suppose to run together and not a a certain temperature. I noticed that my 2nd fan is not on and i vaguely remember it being on. i don't see it hitting on at 220 either? can someone assist?

Nope they won't run at same time unless its a certain temp or ac is on the temp is hot.
Reread the whole thread. 2nd fan comes on at 239 or so

What all are you re-wiring?

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

i guess reason im confused is because shouldnt there be 2 relays 1 for each fan so then wouldnt there be more then just 4 wires at the connector

Thanks for the info.

I saw that orig part of thread but I am thinking the fans were wired to come on together. I will see if I can get a pic of them. I see a wire connecting both together with a bud connector. That is why I am thinking they both run and keep the car running very cool.

your thoughts?

If your seeing wires hooked together, then someone has messed with your harness..
I take that back, the grounds from the fans may be connected and the main power wires to the relays may be connected.

So if this is the case where the grounds were wired together to have run at same time, where would you start first to check why the 2nd fan is not running?

I would check the service manual 4 the wiring diagram, also see (post #6), I would put the wiring back to stock so it works properly. Then get the correct parts to kick the fan on at the temp you want.

Unplug fan, Make a harness and give the fan 12 volts and ground from the batt.
fan run? yes? no? work back from there.

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

Yea I looked at the manual and post #6 and that answers zero questions. Both wiring diagrams show two different wiring setups. I have brand new main harness connector wire and relay connector also the two sets of wires coming from the fans. Do I connect both fans together to the relay or is it wired different

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

The (factory) service manual is all you need. It answers your questions and tells you where everything is located.

Each fan has its own relay but the relays have a single heavy power wire feeding the relays.

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

In the service manual it shows two separate switch sources but the connector only has 5 wires and any aftermarket stock replacement wiring has only one relay and has the two fans wired together as far as I can tell

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

In your factory service manual there is a section called "component location" or something like that. It will tell you where everything is. Heck, it may be on google also.

This looks like the camaro setup because it has the fan jumper connector at the top middle.

This is 4 a single fan but you need to finde one of these 4 a dual fan. It tells you where your relays and things are.

Re: 1989 Dual fan issue

Hmmm thanks for the diagram ill have to see how this is going to work. For some reason to me it looks like I might have the wrong wiring harness for the duel fan setup unless the 89 has a weird setup
