AC Schraeder Valves vs R406a 92 Camaro

Ok, so after all the expense of replacing everything in the system except the hoses and valves, I have a leak. Although I added dye when I charged it, I can't find the leak. I used the dark green HNBR o rings so those could be the problem or the schraeder valves could be the problem.

I have a new black neoprene o ring set on the way. I will change them when I get ready to recharge again.

The only thing I didn't replace (other than the hoses and tubes) are the Schraeder valve cores. I can get cores from most auto parts places that say R12 and R134a compatible but I was wondering what other R406a guys have run into with them. Are the current off the shelf ones ($4 pair) compatible with R406a or do I need to order some AC Delco original ones ($24 each)? Of course the schraeder valve core on the accumulator/drier is new as I replaced that but I don't know if that one would be compatible with R406a either.

Thanks...

Did you ever get an answer or find out which ones to use? I'm gathering the parts now...

Re: AC Schraeder Valves vs R406a 92 Camaro

I managed to get some valve cores on Ebay.. I got a set of small and large bore ones.. Not sure what the size is on the accumulator (I will be changing it in a couple of days)... I went to a pull a part yard and removed a high side valve from a junker 92 (wanted to make sure they unscrew without damaging the high side pipe).. It came out ok without to much force but the crazy hex flange on the valve assembly wants to strip easily.. Had to use locking pliers on it.. Anyway, the core does not appear to be removeable once you have the core assembly unscrewed from the pipe.. I am headed to a GM dealer today to see if they still stock the whole assembly.. Can't find it in after market.. I haven't checked the core yet on the high side fitting that turns the fan on but I think it is pretty much like the accumulator core (removes like a core from an inner tube)... The main thing is that the cores need to be neoprene or something compatible with R406a and R12 so original parts are important...

Re: AC Schraeder Valves vs R406a 92 Camaro

Alright... The high side schrader valve (high side service port valve) is still available from GM.. I just picked one up today from a local dealer.. This is the complete valve assembly with the octagonal sides and it screws into the high side pipe hex fitting next to the coupling to the orifice tube.. The AC Delco number is 15-5414 and the GM number is 88963179.. There was a bit of confusion in getting it ordered as the part assembly drawing has the high side service port valve and the high side fan switch reversed in the picture.. The valve core is not replaceable in the assembly, the whole assembly must be replaced. Bad news is that it is $20...

The new one came with neoprene oring and inner seal.. So, with the neoprene oring kit I got from the The ORing Store and the small and large bore Valve cores I got from Ebay for the Accumulator and the High Side Fan switch I should be set with the right seals.. The rebuilt compressor came with seals that are neoprene.. You do have to watch which seals for the compressor as there is an ORing style and a flat washer style depending upon the compressor..
