first time tuner

OK i just joined the forum because iv been reading tons and tons of information on here for about a week now trying to learn how to tune my truck thanks tbi-max kinda getting me started on the right foot as far as softwere and what ill need and stuff. OK before i go any further i should list what i have and what i plan on doing- i have a 95 Chevy k1500 with 350 TBI with a Whipple supercharger, methanol injection, headers, big block throttle body and as soon as i start tuning i have 80# injectors to put in. it has the 7427... i think... ecm, I'm getting the ostrich 2.0 real time emulator and the usb cable as soon as money allows and iv already downloaded tuner pro rt for tuning and winaldl for data logging. so i can answer most of my own questions just by reading all the info on here but there are a few that i sort just need to ask- when i read all this info it tells me to look in spots like $8D and odd Numbers like that, and I'm learning quick and getting how to tune this stuff fairly well but when i go in to tuner pro i dont see any codes like that for anything i just click on the fuel tables not go into $8D or something like that if you can kinda understand what I'm saying. I'm sure it will be a stupid question once i find the answer but its confusing me. and my other question is can i just buy a wide band 02 sensor and read it thru my laptop thru the data login program or do i need a fancy quage. also can the computer run off of a wide band instead of an NB 02?

i will update this tread with posting data from dataloging and such and hopefully get some help from you guys. sorry if i posted a thread that every newb already posted. this site is really helping me and I'm learning quick the only thing that throws me off is all this talk about burning chips and i dont need to do that with my ecm...

o yea one last thing, i have no egr and constantly in limp mode with the service engine light on, and when its not on I'm ruining off of Whipple's tune for 5psi and im making 9psi and have methanol injection and a bigger throttle body so I'm WAY outa tune. i get 8mpg at best but i am siting on big tires. I'm hoping for about 11mpg when i get it right

thanks for any help in advance, any tips on tuning would be greatly appreciated also.

Re: first time tuner

Does 7427 support boost? I think you will need a 2 bar MAP.

you need to correct .bin for the non-EGR. Probably why the CE light. A datalog will show you what codes are present and explain CE light on.
you can run the NB as well as the WB. I run the NB for CL operation and the WB for datalogging. My ECU does not see the WB but it could if I so chose.
Your first datalog will be with engine running at idle for BLM.

Re: first time tuner

the 749 syclone ecm will run tbi

the folks over at code59 really have come a long way with it

personally i would repin the harness to a 749 ecm wire a wideband in and tune away

Re: first time tuner

i get code 32 which is egr malfunction so thats the CE light. i dont think i need to worry about running my computer with a 2 bar because i have a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator so shouldn't that be enough to take over under boost. but i have a 2 bar siting right next to my one bar running my methanol injection so i have it if i can use it that would be great. so how exactly do i get the wb in there? i put the wb 02 sensor in my header bung and run the wires to... were???

what does blm stand for again? Ive been doing some reading but hopefully it will all make more sense once i can actually open up my bin and look at the files and get familiar with playing with them and such.

thanks for the help

Re: first time tuner

Remove EGR from your .bin. That should turn off EGR CE light code. If EGR routines occur I think it will affect your datalog/tuning. BLM is block learn mode/long term fueling. in closed loop a 128 BLM is considered stoich or 14.7/1 for non ethanol gas. 127 means it is rich and pulls fuel. 129 is lean and adds fuel. INT is integrator and is short term fueling. It too uses a 128 concept. I forget how long it takes for a INT that is off 128 to trigger a change in BLM.

Not sure but I thought a boost referenced fuel pressure reg is not as favorable as MAP. A search may show a thread.

Do you have an adequate fuel pump?

What kind of fuel flow capacity do you think you will need?

check this out. It tells you what fuel you need for various combinations of CID/fuel pressure/HP. I think it is pretty cool.

I have plans to add a Procharger next season. Only issue is my static compression is too high 10.0/1. But maybe I buy the peanut size Procharger for imports.

Re: first time tuner

ok i understand about the blm i have already read tons on that. i have enough psi, im running a walbro high psi pump, 100psi (overkill) and about 14psi at idle and 20ish under boost, i dont plan on adding more psi because my 454 80# injectors will be perfect for that fuel pressure range... thanks for the link.

i need to figure out how to get the wideband 02 sensor in without an expensive guage. also i am going thru hell here trying to find a decent thread/diagram on how to make my own aldl to serial cable.

Re: first time tuner

ok i need help with this aldl cable bad, ive been reading and searching for about 3 hours and have gotten no where, how the hell do i make the ****ing cable? nobody has any clean simple thread on how to do it they just mention how stupid you are for buying a cable that you can make for 10$ and then never elaborate how to actualy make it!!!! i found one good diagram but cant figure out how to read it, i dont know what some of thees symbols and random letters mean? also is it as simple as building a aldl to serial cable then getting a serial to usb adapter to throw on top of it all? HELP!

Re: first time tuner

thats because alot of guys are know it alls in here.in my opinion theres very few really smart people in here an the rest are just book smart an have no exp in tuning and will argue with you even if there dead wrong about something. its not just in this forum, but every forum on here .for example theres a gut in one forum who acts like he knows more stuff on cylinder heads than a guy like tony mamo from afr .watched him argue for 2 days aout headflow because he has a 383 with a superam big deal

Re: first time tuner

so today i came out of a corner with the pedel to the floor(i know, bad idea) and as i let of the gas somewhat abruptly it sort of sputters or cuts out but it doesnt stall or nothing too serious like that but still something is obviously wrong and i know its tuning but what caractersitics would that be lean or rich? i would say itd have to be rich since my headers leek pretty bad... now my methanol controller refuses to work, problems problems
