268 xfi with bolt on stealth ram

My question is,will it run right with a tpi computer and a stage 2 prom?
heres the set up
comp cam 268 XFI Roller
L98 Iron heads screw in studs slightly ported
Holley Stealth Ram
Tpis 58mm throlle body
24 lb Injectors
Harris stage 2 chip
flowtech headers and y pipeborla cat back (no cats
2200 stall

I bought this stealth ram kit of the boards here with out really knowing what I was getting into. I dropped it off at a speed shop had a engine built and stealth ram bolted on,they havnt installed it yet but are already questioning the drivability and tuning, thx for any input.

Re: 268 xfi with bolt on stealth ram

Driveability should be pretty good.have it installed and have a new chip made with for the new setup. The car will start and drive with the current chip..but not to full potential.

Email the guys at pcmforless..i think its called if you dont want to mess around with tuning yourself.List everything you have done to the car for mods. They will make you a decent chip. But for now..stick it in and break in the cam and let it run for awhile.Should still be ok to drive around for awhile..just not too hard on it.

Re: 268 xfi with bolt on stealth ram

believe me i know how you feel lol.
im in the middle of building a 383 hsr with a 280xfi,plus i spent money on getting all the tuning equipment..built in a laptop just for the car so i can tune on the fly aswell.

i was going to start with just building a 355 with the 268xfi and hsr..but its not expensive to stroke the motor ontop of that for even more power/torque so i went with it.

Re: 268 xfi with bolt on stealth ram

stock chip may run it ok for alittle while but its going to need some adjustments. Mainly top end fueling and idle. May want abit more idle rpm and fuel adjustments at idle to stabilize it. Also could take abit more timing.

It should come around with a tune. Not sure mail order is best idea but could work well enough for now

If you are anywhere near Tipton check The Auto Shop for tuning.

Re: 268 xfi with bolt on stealth ram

Shifting early might be due to not adjusting the tv cable. As for idling too low just reset it a lil higher. What is your rpm at idle..compared to idle in gear?Id assume you should be at 850 in park with that cam for now.

Re: 268 xfi with bolt on stealth ram

I ran mine on stock chip, (little bigger build), but it ran great (minus off idle WOT), ran a bit rich, but still pulled very strong....I have had pcmforless do a chip, and was very impressed with the results, I have since datalogged and dyno ran to get a tune up chip done to get a way better tune. Alvin at pcmforless will send ya a 'base' tune then likes to have more info to adjust too.

Re: 268 xfi with bolt on stealth ram

IDK what happined...this engine was STRONG,tons of torque, would spin the tires with no problem all the way throught 2nd if you please.that was before I left Iowa, after the drive to A.Z. I notice it ate some oil,and the oil was very black upon arrival, now It seems like my torque is gone.it wont spin the tires like it use to,still pulls hard but not like before.and my oil pressure isnt what it use to be either its fine at start up.
it use to never drop below 45 at idle and 60psi at cold start, now it around 55psi cold start then gets down gets down as low as 27-30 at idle after its warmed up, 45-50 psi under throttle cruzzing.
no smoke from exhaust at all,and doesnt seem to be eating oil anymore, and the oil is very clean.
Im really confused.wher did my power go?...Im thinking the worst, I have some sort of ring problem, and if so the engine is still under warrenty...time for a compression test?

this article sounds a lot like my situation.
http://www.camaroz28.com/forums/arch.../t-522432.html

Ill mess with the timing tomorrow and see whats up,still dont make sence why it was so powerful in iowa but not in AZ,is the climate THAT much differnt to make a HUGE change like that?...maybe I need another prom burnt, idk im confused and pissed....

Re: 268 xfi with bolt on stealth ram

If your car was a map setup then I would say that yes the climate would have more affect on the performance.Aside from that maybe its time to due some maintainace on the car now that its broken in.Recheck valve lash, header bolts and re-time the motor.Wouldnt be the first time Ive seen distributor hold down bolt losen back up on a fresh motor and the timing starts to walk away from you.Keep us posted

they dont need break in like they did 50 years ago. is you bottom end made
out of plastic?? stand on that thing or it will be forever SLOW!

crook to cop:
OFFICER the Cuffs are a bit tight..

officer to crook:

Its all roller,It was super powerful in iowa but now im in az and its weak, its ok but nothing like before, anyways Alvin from pcmforless said the altitude makes a huge differnce, send him my chip and he will reset it for az climate.
Im sure everything is fine,im just over thinking and reacting.

There is both elevation and temperature working against the engine. Although looking at the elevation of Olin, IA, it is at 800'. Where Buckeye Az is about 900'. Not much difference. Not sure what area of IA you are originally referring to. But isn't most of Iowa flat?

Iowa has the advantage of being cooler. In the 50's - 60's this time of year.

Buckeye being in the mid 80's to 90's.

Although Arizona has the advantage of lower humidity. Currently 24% vs. 77% for Iowa.

The real wild card is the fuel composition. What differences are there between Iowa fuel and Arizona fuel?

RBob.

You might try contacting AZTPI, They burn chips for our cars and are located here in AZ, since they are local they can probably get your tune closer than mailing your chip back and it will also be less down time for the car.

Not a horrible idea, being that a hopped up GTA I am familiar with tend's to flirt with the red on the temp gauge with how hot it is right now.

It never goes above 200-220.This hot air Just zaps the power from it.The paint isnt all that great but its shiny and Im not about to let the sun ruin that, and my interior hasnt been molested by the heat either,I had a few of these cars years ago when i lived here,Iknow what the sun can do to them.

Actually ive never seen it above 200,stays around 160-180

I hear that! The dash pad in my 91 has been punished pretty hard by the sun during its tenure with the previous owner.

Re: 268 xfi with bolt on stealth ram

Finally got it dialed in!! and she screeeams,3.27 rear gear so she is a top end beast, nice launch of the line, barely spins, just barely, then pulls hard!
Of course you can break stand it,but thers no need, the launch is perfect, have to manually shift the gears,or it shifts abit early..but damn going down the freeway around 70 and stomp it,she pulls to 140 HARD and QUIK,screeams!! thank you pcmforless for the reburn, next stop AZTPI

RBob.
