Pocket Programer 2 and other details.

Looks like we have most of the kinks worked out for the win2000 version of the software – programs 29C256 in just over 20seconds. Anyone who bought a programmer at $149.95 is entitled to an upgrade – contact us for the password. The link is http://xtronics.com/memory/EPROM.htm#Upgrades .

Just to keep you informed and up to date – we are now on the “Pocket Programmer 2” Which won’t make much difference to most car guys. But, just so you know the differences are:

Windows 2000,XP,NT support (perhaps it will now work with WinME – but we hope everyone will avoid that mess of an operating system. We also strongly advise folks to skip Windows XP – get Windows 2000 instead – XP is sort of a cross between an operating system and Spam e-mail. It is full of advertising to get you to by M$ products – more than annoying – they also went out of their way to break competitors software products – be warned!.)

The wall adapter is now center positive (don’t interchange – but the new one won’t get hurt by backward voltage!)

More rugged Vpp – shorted 2732s won’t burn out the unit.

Header for future expansion for chips with even more pins.

Many added parts to the supported list including 27SF256 – a flash drop in for a 27C256 – but now without need for an adapter.

Other tips:

Put a Machine socket on the Emulator header. You end up plugging the pins of the machine socket into the car’s computer socket instead of the cable header. Now, if you break a pin off, it will be the machine socket and not the header. Then all you have to do is replace the socket.

Not a bad Idea to use a machine socket on your car computer board as well.

2732 – Oh, this is a nasty chip – it comes with more than one suffix and has differing programming voltages. If you program it with too high of a voltage you ruin the chip – AND sometimes blow out the programming voltage supply. The new programmer should be better about this and not cook itself. Be VERY careful about WHICH 2732 you are working with.

APC Sleep mode power down etc. These set ups are a problem – especially on lap tops. They are in the BIOS code so there is no way for us to turn them off in software. They are often the cause of problems programming the Flash 29C256. There is one IBM lap top that is set up so you CANNOT turn it off. Make sure there is a way to disable the power down settings before you buy a lap top.

I’m going to ask Norma to get some Machine sockets and 29C256 chips in so you can pick up a couple at a time.

We also now have a cigarette adapter for powering the Pocket programmer – be sure to get the correct one – there are two different ones – for the Pocket programmer 1 and 2. It puts out a regulated 9VDC – the 12 to 14 Volts on a car can sometimes cook things.

As always, if you have a problem, we are here to help – we can’t help you with your car-tuning-software but we will do what we can to get you from a file to a burned EPROM.

Till Later
