HELP, noob cant figure out ostrich 2.0

so i went out and installed my ostrich 2.0 and installed the chip adapter as the instructions on moates said. i have the 7427 ecm. so i set the emulator on the 28 setting(what i thought was the right one) and the truck sputers and dies upon fire-up. put the ecm back to stock with just my stock chip and it runs fine again. so i put it back together with the adapter and emulator and try the 32 setting, runs, but like crap, same for the other setting. what is my problem? i tried searching, i tried all the documentation on moates and i cant make sense of any of it. do i have to set up the emulator on my laptop before i run the truck?

also, i ran a datalog(not really having a clue what to be looking for) and i noticed that my 02 sensor reads odd, i think its bad, it will stay at about 600-900 then all of the sudden jump down to 60 or 70, low numbers like that. is this normal? the blm goes all over the place at idle, but acts fairly normal when driving.

any help would be appreciated. thanks.

You didn't mention uploading any bin to the Ostrich.

You need to upload the bin file for the truck, through a program, TP RT, for example.

ok, i had figured that since the adapter uses my chip as well as the emulator as sort of a piggyback setup that it would justs tart with my chip. how do i get the bin file off of my stock chip? i cant just download a stock bin file becasue im starting from a tune that whipple made for the the truck, obviously its way off due to a bigger tb and injectors and more boost, but its allot closer than a stock bin.

thanks again for all the help six shooter, you've really been a big help with my datalog cable and what not.

Ok, do you have a chip programmer and a MEMCAL adaptor, like the Moates' HDR1?

Re: HELP, noob cant figure out ostrich 2.0

You will need the burn1 also if you want to read your stock chip or you could try to find a copy of the bin on the net and use that instead.

Re: HELP, noob cant figure out ostrich 2.0

im using an emulator, why do i need anything to burn chips, all i need to do it ake the info from the chip i have and put it on the emulator right? i really cant afford another 100$...

whipple stopped making blowers for my truck long ago and finding that bin file would be hard. could i even think about starting from a stock bin file?

Re: HELP, noob cant figure out ostrich 2.0

The reason you need the programmer is to read the chip that you already have. The programmer doesn't JUST program chips, it is also used to read them.

In this case, you use the HDR1 to adapt the MEMCAL to the programmer, to be able to read the chip.
I have to wonder though, you say you have an aftermarket MEMCAL, and in most cases they seem to come with adaptors similar to the G1. If that's the case you don't need the HDR1, just the BURN1 (which is actually the BURN2 now, the site just isn't updated yet).

Another option would be to have someone local to you that has a programmer read your chip for you.

it may already have the adapter, your right. but that things is 85$ and i really just cant afford that after spending 540$, im only 17. i dont think anyone local has the tuning stuff, not to mention i probably have one of the oldest trucks around here, everyone has newer trucks.

so the question is, could i get going from a stock bin, or would it just be too much work.

i dont understand why the hell the adapter uses my stock memcal with the ostrich. why doesn't it just use the ostrich if the stock chip is their for nothing? i read something about how my knock retard and limp home mode is all part of it, so i guess i just answered my own question on that one.

Yes, you can start from a stock bin. May or may not be better than from what you have. The problem is that the whipple programming may need a 2 BAR MAP sensor (I'm speculaing since I don't own a whipple system), and in that case the stock bin will be of no use.

The MEMCAL adaptor bypasses the stock EPROM, but retains the knock filter and limp home modes. If you look closely at the MEMCAL adaptor you will see that the stock EEPROM doesn't have any pins from the adaptor connected to it.

You can get cheaper programmers, but they are much more difficult to use.

I have a Willems "Dual Power" EPROM programmer and use it periodically. Due to the need to change jumpers and dip switch settings between different chip sizes and types, and also between reading, erasing, and programming makes it not beginner friendly. But it is cheap, usually between $20 and $35 shipped depending on where you get it from.

Whipple does not use a 2 bar. im still on the stock 1 bar. the kit comes with a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator, and thats were the magic happens as far as dealing with boost for the most part. when i think about it and look at the chip adapter it makes perfect sense, i should have realized it sooner.

so how non user friendly is this cheepo system? is it something i could do with the help of someone like yourself who knows how to use it or could i screw something up in the process? i only need to do it once just to get the bin file, seems simple enough... right? lol
