Starter Won't Switch Off, Wiring Problem?

This is on an 86 SC LG4 305.

I put in a new starter and wired the thick black wire from the batter, and 2 orange fusible link wires to the large terminal on the solenoid and purple wire to the terminal closest to the block. I'm 99% sure I've got this right. The problem is when you turn the key to START, the starter starts but won't shut off when you turn it back to ON/RUN. I even took the key out and it was still going. Why is it doing this?

I've got the heads and intake off right now, but I had everything grounded. Shouldn't the ignition switch shut the starter off when turned back to ON/RUN?

TIA

THICK Black wire to starter!!!!! Do you mean Thick RED wire to starter? The Black is the ground wire! If you did that it could definately be your problem.

However, if it is the red wire you were talking about, then, the selonoid on the new starter is bad also. This happened to me on a truck I had. It was definately the starter that was the problem.

Check to see if the purple wire 'closest to the block' (I belive the 'S' terminal) is keeping +12v on it after the key is returned to the run/on position. If it is keeping 12v, the ignition switch could be sticking . If it only had 12v on it during crank, have the starter tested and if needed, replaced. I went thru 2 Advance starters (the cast gear casing literally broke in half on both) before getting one from Autozone that worked properly.

I still need help with this.

I checked the purple S terminal wire. It gets 12v only when the ignition is on START. I had the starter tested at Advance, no problems. I'm 99.9% I have this thing wired correctly. Thick wire from positive battery terminal and two fusible linked wires to the main terminal and the purple wire to the S terminal. The switch turns the starter on, then when the ignition is turned off, the starter seems to slow down, but will not stop! It cranks the engine until I disconnect the neg battery terminal.

Any ideas?

Gotta be a sticking solenoid...do you have another solenoid you can put on to try?

No, I don't have a spare solenoid. The guy at advance tested it and it worked. Then I got it home and wired it up and tested it while it was not attached to the engine. Then I attached it and it won't shut off.
