Wiring from Hatch release motor-HELP!
I recently did a stupid thing and bought a new hatch release motor repair kit, only to find out it is a wiring issue. I'm not getting 12volts from the Red/White wiring that basically runs the motor-I'm told I need to trace it back to the fuse box and look for burns, bare wiring, etc. But BEFORE I go tearing up the car, does anyone know where the wiring goes after you drop down next to the back seat? (I mean when I'm tracing the wire from the rear motor, it goes under the trunk trim on the driver's side and then next to the back seat, it disappears.) I've checked under the lower console and the wiring looks good at the fuse box. It also seems like the bundle the wiring goes onto from the fuse box, goes along the instrument panel heading toward the radio/AC controls, etc.

I'm sorry I don't have specifics for you as I don't have my Z with me today, but check two things
1.)Does the light in your rear hatch come on when you open it? This is powered off the same circuit
2.)There is a fuse for the rear hatch - I forget the label, but it is a 15amp in my car - check your fuses first!
sorry if you've done this, your message said you just checked for burns etc. - a fuse will (hopefully!) pop before anything burns!

Check what Thirtybird said first. Then if you must trace the wires they run behind the paneling beside the backseat. (read: PITA to get to) From there they drop down into a plastic casing that runs between the seat and the door (right below where the bottom part of the seatbelt bolts to the floor)

The fuse may be in a seperate fuseholder near the fuse block in your 89. My 89 takes a 15A fuse.

yes-I've already checked the fuses-both the courtesy fuse,(20) and the fuse right behind the whole fuse box(the 15) and both are still good. I have also checked the relay for the electric pop on the dash, that's OK...and I checked what I thought was the wiring harness for the relay under the passenger side of the dash-this is what my "bible"-the service manual said. Lon from Top Down Solutions where I bought the new motor said I MUST have 12 volts going from the red/white wiring to the motor-I have at best, maybe 5.2 or something-I also have no power, or it registers none, to the plug going to the solenoid assembly. All other wires register or are grounded as the wiring schematic dictates. So maybe I should just let the auto electrical place down the road look at it.
