XMas Radio Upgrade Woes - Santa is in TROUBLE!

TGO Guys,

I purchased a NEWER GM CD Radio for install in my son's '82 Z-28 (Surprise X-Mas Present). I am not at all sure what vehicle or year it came from as it was a J.Yard Purchase. I do not know if this radio was offered in any of the later ThirdGen F-Bodies yet some E-Bay ads indicate it was.

I snagged a connector and line from a odd-ball car at the U-Pull-It yard to match up with the radio as the '82 connector was a dinosaur. A TGO friend provided the GM wiring diagram. I'm very confident that it is wired properly. All connections are sound as they have been soldered and heat-shrunk very nicely.

Unfortunately, the radio does basically nothing. If I press the Hour/Minute buttons it will display the time (briefly). It will load and eject a CD but it won't play anything. That's all it will do. Either the Theft Lock is screwing things up or this radio is Trash I just can't figure out which it is.

I found (TGO Search) a procedure for loading the Theft Lock code that was posted by a Moderator. However, that procedure indicates starting the process by depressing "SET"..... there is no "SET" on this model GM radio.

One of my TGO friends will probably be able to provide the Theft Code but it is also likely he's enjoying Xmas Eve with his children (as he should) and I can not get the code from the Chevy Dealer until Tuesday.
  • If anyone knows the pass code please let me know.
  • If anyone knows the procedure for entering it into this radio please help also.
  • If anyone can tell me what SCV (see photo) means that would be extra special as well.
  • There is a indicator next to the volume control... Is that supposed to light up when powered?

Thanks for any assistance.
Have a Great Holiday Guys!

Sincerely
Kurt

The thing you have the arrow pointing to is the SCV, or Speed Controlled Volume. If it is hooked up, it turns up the volume the faster you go so it is always at a good level. There is an article on hooking that up.. Let me dig it up, be right back.

Radio is TRASH! - Helpful Radio Unlocking Information

TGO Guys......

Well it seems my son's XMas radio is TRASH. Fortunately, the J.Yard I purchased it at gave me a 30 day exchange guarantee. Actually, at the time I purchased it they had another GM CD Player and I couldn't decide which one I wanted. The sales guy told me I could exchange for the other one if there was a problem.

A very good TGO friend offered information in a private e-mail that I think some of ya'll may find useful either now or at some later time. Therefore, I'm going to post it to this thread as I'm sure he wouldn't mind. HERE GOES:

This procedure will correct all RADIO THEFTLOCK concerns for the vehicles listed. Please read the following carefully! There are time limits associated with some of these steps. Therefore, if the directions are not followed properly, unnecessary wait time will occur. The mode the radio theft deterrent system is in will determine which steps to be followed.

The theftlock theft deterrent feature in some models includes an LED indicator light that will blink when the ignition is off and the unit is in the secured state.

Radio display definition:

LOC: Means the radio is locked and there is a customer code stored in the radio.
InOP: Means too many wrong codes have been entered and the radio must be left powered up to 1 hour with battery and ignition applied before 3 more attempts can be made
SEC: Means there is a customer code stored, but the radio is unlocked
---: Means there is no customer code stored and the radio is unlocked
REP: Means the customer code has been entered once, and the radio now wants the code repeated to verify the code was entered correctly the first time.

Procedure:
Retrieving scrambled back-up code from unit - with battery and ignition voltages applied and unit power is on.
  1. If the unit is in the locked condition (LOC is displayed), proceed to step 2. Otherwise, press and hold presets 1 and 4 for about 4 seconds. The display will show either SEC or ---.
  2. Press and hold presets 2 and 3 for about 6 seconds until the first 3 digits of the display code are displayed. Write the numbers down.
  3. Press the AM_FM button and the second 3 digits of scrambled code are displayed. Write the numbers down. The unit will revert to the initial display, prior to code retrieval sequence, after approximately 5 seconds or if another button is pressed.
Note: If after depressing the AM-FM button the display does not change, your second set of 3 digits will be the same as the first 3 digits. (Example; if 123 came up first, your scrambled code will be 123123.)

With the "Scrambled" code and the radio's serial number in-hand any GM dealer can provide the "Un-Scrambled" code to you. My local Chevy dealer offered to provide the code for free if I could produce a sales receipt (i.e. J.Yard Receipt) for the purchase of a used radio.

As my radio is properly wired, displays NOTHING, and will not respond to the above procedure it's trash.

The J. Yard opens tomorrow and Santa can get the replacement. Hopefully I won't find that the J.Yard's replacement is also trash.

Have a great holiday!
Kurt

Just for curiosity, how did you mount that? My son gave me his out of his 98 Sierra (just like your radio) I had to take off the plastic side mounts and fab some tabs and it barely fit in a 3rd gen. Plus the outside plastic stock bezel had to be trimmed to fit the massive ba****rd.

Exactly the install of the one I did in my 89 RS, even to the removal of the slides (I used the bottom plate of another radio), except I didn't need to modify the vent ducts at all. The SCV doesn't work with mine, I think the 2000 pulse per mile input to the ECM (TBI 305) is not enough as most others are 4000 pulses.

RABRAND,

Quite honestly I never reached the finished product. However the radio I purchased did not have any "side slides" on it. The link provided by ToeHead is fantastic and very detailed. But.... I did slip the radio into the slot with ease and was able to secure two(2) screws (one on each side). Maybe the 82's air vents are a little smaller or different somehow as I don't believe I'll need to make that modification as described in the link ToeHead provided.

I am certain that I will need to make a small modification to bracket that accepts the plastic alignment pin on the rear. The stock hole is a little low and it wouldn't engage properly so I just removed it until I was sure the radio was going to work.

Unfortunately, the radio is junk and I'll have to trade it in tomorrow at the J.Yard.

Sincerely,
Kurt

Now on J.Yard Radio #3 UGH!!!

TGO Guys,

I determined conclusively that the Radio/CD (#1) was trash. I went back to the J.Yard and exchanged the radio for the other one I had seen previously (#2). It was a slightly different style of radio but look acceptable. Guess What? Also trash.... However, Radio #2 provided me with some useful information. The AM/FM worked great, The Clock Worked, and the lights dimmed when I turned on the head lamps. The CD player would take a CD and tried to play it but just clicked and chirped (Getting the CD back out was a bit or a struggle) I figure..... my wiring is perfect.

I returned to the J.Yard for a third trip but drove Derek's Z-28 to test on-site. Unfortunately, the only other thing they could find in stock was a "Pontiac" AM/FM CD (#3) with Horrid Red Lighting, Gray Face, Missing ****, Worn Lettering on the Buttons, and Prominent PONTIAC label. Just for a final check of the wiring I took it to the parking lot and it worked well and CD's played perfectly. So..... for the time being..... Derek will use it until they get another one in. The J.Yard guy told me to check back in a couple weeks. If I could get my money back and try somewhere else I would but it's a CREDIT on future purchases only and none of the other J.Yards in the area have anything in-stock or offer "0" refund on electrical parts. For the moment I'm stuck.

They've been pretty decent about trying to give me something that'll be good so hopefully they'll get something new in the next couple weeks. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Thanks Again,
Kurt

P.S. The link Toehead provided was correct. The older ('82 +/-) antenna is too fat to fit into a newer ('88+) radio. I had to get an adapter from the local auto parts store for about $10.

Santa Comes Through! Although a bit late...

TGO Guys,

I managed to REPAIR & Install a CD Player in DEREK's '82 Z-28. FINALLY!!!!

Early today I went back to the J.Yard today and tried a couple more radios (on site with Derek's Z-28). Each played AM/FM well but would not play a CD. Each lit up "ERR" when a CD was inserted.

The parts counter guy was getting very tired of me as he certainly didn't make any money on this deal. I suggested he let me take a couple of 'em home as it might just be a cleanliness issue I would be willing to try and repair. He let me out with THREE (3) of them. I disassembled them and found one that looked like someone had tried to play a burrito in it.... IT WAS THAT DISGUSTING INSIDE! After a complete disassembly and a thorough cleaning with alcohol, q-tips, spray air (Keyboard Cleaner Kit), I managed to get one of them 100% functional. It was "Unlocked" and it plays very well. DEREK LOVES IT!!!

The player looks like it came with the car! The one I installed had the extra cooling fan on the rear and some minor modification to the air ducts was required but I don't think that was too big of a sacrifice. All-in-all it cost me Radio ($50), + Antenna Adapter ($10 +/-), + Cleaning supplies from Office Depot ($15 +/-). A pretty good deal for a GM AM/FM CD Player with a Black Face that looks and plays very well!!!

Thanks again for all the help!

Kurt
