Yes it's the sending unit. And Yes Chevy’s prices are way out of line.
I bought one from Autometer but the Resistances didn't match so I used an Autometer Gauge also. I needed to rig it to fit and work in the originals place (not to hard).
If I had known at the time I would have gone this route. Summit sells some after senders at:
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294776442
It will take some adapting to work with the original tubes and fuel pump assembly.

The only way to do that is to buy it from the dealer. The stock sending unit is integrated into the fuel lines and the only part that was meant to be replaced is the fuel pump itself. If you pull the sending unit out you'll see what I'm talking about.

With some minor fab work you can get one of the ones from Summit to work in the stock location.

I gave you a link to Summit, they have 3 that might work.
Mine was the wrong values and required a new fuel gauge.
The ones at summit will work with the stock gauge.

I don't have a before picture but it looked similar to the after picture. The white piece with the float attached is the sending unit. You will need to remove the original one, drill 2 holes and bolt up the after market one, if it's like the one I got from Autometer.

Here's an after Picture:

Re: fuel sending unit

just a quick note but year one will rebuild the stock sending unit for $150. My car did not have an intank fuel pump, it was just the sending unit. neither did either of my 84's.. impossible to find a sending unit without the pump attached to it though from a dealer. they want to sell you the whole thing. Although I was quoted a $450 price tag. (non-dealer but still an ac delco part)
