HUUUUGE GAUGE CLUSTER PROBLEMS!

Alright so I bought the IROC dash cluster and have installed it. The only gauge I have that currently is working is my speedo. Does anyone know where the cluster wiring ground is? Or, even more helpful, could someone describe my problem. So I installed this cluster, and at the time had my oil pressure gauge working and speedo. Trying to get the tach to work, I put 12V to the wires that connect into the "tach area" and I think i burned up the oil pressure gauge???? This did not get my tach to work, although playing with it in the engine bay was somehow making it fall from 7000 to 0? My fuel gauge works when it wants to, plain and simple. It is currently not working and i think that is due to a bad ground? For my temp gauge, I put a torch to the sending unit, and saw a rise in temp but hooked up it moves, but very very slowly and wont seem to go past 110 in 5 minutes. (I cant let it idle long i have an overheating problem) Anyways, can someone tell me where the cluster ground is, what are some of my issues, and what should i do? I can get a cluster for $50. I would really appreciate it my car is so close to being road worthy!

Are you trying to swap a guage cluster into a dash that previously had idiot lights? If so, check the tech board for the how-to. Did the original cluster function as designed before the swap? If so, you might consider swapping the IROC speedo head into your original cluster.

I just tried putting the old cluster in and the fuel gauge reads way above full. It did have dummy lights yes. I bought the oil and temp sending units to convert to gauges. I also eliminated the electric fuel pump due to it being bad. I took out my interior and put it back in maybe i screwed a wire for fuel gauge?

Re: HUUUUGE GAUGE CLUSTER PROBLEMS!

When I upgraded my 87 *idiot* light cluster to a guage cluster it was almost plug and play. As you know; you need to buy the correct engine sensors to get the systems operational - but the wiring was already there and I had to do NOTHING to the gauge cluster. ( the cluster was fully functional ! )

I put 12V to the wires that connect into the "tach area"
That could have done a lot of bad things. If you touched the wrong pin than you may have fired out the printed circuit. Like I said - my conversion was install the sensors, install the cluster and it all worked.

For my temp gauge, I put a torch to the sending unit
Throw it away and buy another one. I would never trust it again after that.

I also eliminated the electric fuel pump / fuel gauge reads way above full.
There is a 3 wire plug running to you 87 Fuel tank. It runs through the body behind the center of the rear seat backrest. Black (ground - to under drivers side rear seat ) and pink (gauge wire). The third wire could be yellow or grey or whatever,..... the third wire is for the fuel pump.

It sounds to me like either you disconnected one or both of the gauge wires, OR, the float on the fuel tank assembly is stuck. Either one of those things would cause the needle to get pinned to the MAX. I don't know if you cut the wires or removed the tank pick-up to get rid of the electric pump.... but that may have caused your fuel gage problems.

You didn't mention your VOLTS,........ any problem with that gauge ??

Re: HUUUUGE GAUGE CLUSTER PROBLEMS!

That one works properly, so yeah just speedo and votage works currently

With the water temp sending unit, I didnt hold the torch to it, I was just trying to see if it was gonna work and get the gauge moving by putting heat to it but I wasnt making it "red hot". Does this make any difference.

I'm pretty sure the 3rd wire your talking about on the fuel gauge is gray for me, I'll check on this stuff this weekend...HARD lol.

Also, when i drive it on bumpy roads, my fuel gauge goes absolutely NUTS just crazy but none of the others do. Ground issue?

Re: HUUUUGE GAUGE CLUSTER PROBLEMS!

Alright all I have news.

My fuel sending unit is junk. What sucks is from an auto parts store they wont sell the sending unit alone, they gotta come with the electric fuel pump, and I dont need it... But, I got an electronic guy who thinks he can fix my oil pressure by jumping the circuit? As for water temp, I'm going to do what someone above said (sorry forgot who) and by a new sending unit and see if that does the job. If not, ill be back

Thanks all for your help!
