Turn signal switch wiring (missing wires)

89 Formula 305TPI.

At the bottom of the steering column, the connector for the turn signal switch has two connectors coming out of it on my car. Well, there would be a third for the cruise but, someone hacked up my harness.

So, one connector is the big one and then I have a 5 wire one that goes to the wipers. I have no HI wiper mode but, applying 12 volts to the purple wire, I get HI so, that's the switch I guess.

But, anyhow, on the Large connector there are two connectors on the car that go to the turn signal switch, one is a 3 wire connector. There are 3 wires on the car that go to it, but, no wires out of the column. I am wondering what these wires are for.

When I look up replacement switches they show the wires in place. So, I am wondering what these are for?

Re: Turn signal switch wiring (missing wires)

So what type of turn signal lever do you have? There are two types, one for cars without cruise control and one with cruise control. The turn signal lever for the non curise cars costs about $20. The one for cruise cars costs about $60. The difference in the price is the cost of the curise control switch and the wiring attached to it.

As you indicate that you have no wiring for the cruise control connector at the base of the steering column, I wonder if you have a non cruise trun signal lever. With the crusie control turn signal lever, you must thread the wiring from the switch on the lever down through the steering column. See the attached diagram.

The three wire colors for the crusie control wiring, from the cruise switch on the turn signal lever, are Brown, Blue, and Black. Are those the wire colors for the connector you have on the car?

I am not sure what you mean when you state that replacement switch "show the wiring in place". A photo or web link would be heplful.

So you might want to confirm that you actually have the crusie control turn signal lever, or maybe the wiring was cut off it when it was installed.

Re: Turn signal switch wiring (missing wires)

Well, it's weird, someone replaced the cruise lever with a non-cruise one, the wiring is still below the column but cut off (the end that would be up the column). Sorry, I forgot to indicate that part.

Now if you look at this picture:

At the lower end of the connector, there are three wires. On my car, there are not any wires there, but, I have a connector on the vehicle's harness that plugs in there that has those wires. My only guess is that they are for VATS? I'm wondering if it is for VATS, if it will cause an issue.

But, As my curious question before mentions, the switch in the picture above for the same car as mine appears to have the wiper wiring through the main connector whereas mine has a separate connector, which makes me wonder what exactly I should do. I have no HI wiper mode, but when I jumper the wires with 12V it goes to HI, otherwise it's at about 6 volts.

The Turn signal lever does not rotate correctly for the wiper modes either.

Now, maybe I am taking this wrong, the wiper switch is "part" of the turn signal switch assembly, right?

I'm thinking about taking apart the column but, don't feel like dropping it unless I really should. I may take of the wheel and the lock plate tomorrow to look, just for good measure.

Thanks for helping me,
-Dave

That three wire connector could well be for VATS. However, some folks disable the VATS function. If your car is running now without those wires connected, I would suspect that the VATS function is disabled. However I don't have VATS on my car ( too old ) so I don't know for sure. If you search, there are quite a few thread on VATS and how to disable it.

Sounds like the turn signal lever and wiper wiring are not factory, but someone's fix it up idea. You might be farther ahead in replacing the column wiper wiring and the turn signal lever with one set up for curise control. You already have the wire harness, based on your photo. You can look here for replacement turn signal levers...

You have it right, the "wiper switch" is not part of the turn signal lever. It is part of the wiring harness you have pictured. And it does mount in the steering column.
