Daytime running light conversion

Has anyone done a DRL conversion on a 3rd gen? If so are there any tips / suggestions? I need to setup DRL's on a 92 formula I recently purchased to pass local laws for registration. Thank you

Re: Daytime running light conversion

They made a law that all cars regardless of age have to have daytime running lights?

Re: Daytime running light conversion

would a set of driving lights work??? if so thats what i would so hook them up to a relay that comes on with the ing.......JC Whitney had and my still have a DRL kit, but with having flip up lights it wouldnt work i dont think

you could do like some of the chevys do and use a bright bulb in the signal housing (like a turn or brake light bulb) they make sockets that you can drill a hole in the housing and pop the socket in, that way it would be seperate from the turn signal.......but then you may run into a issue with it flooding out the turn signal when you use it

Re: Daytime running light conversion

Well I am in Alberta Canada and in 1989 they passed a law making DRL madatory. So my canadian 1991 formula came with them from factory, the 92 formula I just got that originated in IL doesn't. So for me to have it pass inspection I have to retrofit them.

I was looking at the wiring diagram and checking under the dash. I think I can connect, with a fuseable link, dark blue off the fuse panel with brown off the back of the light switch and that should turn on the clearence lights when in the run position.

What do you guys think? Seems simple enough. It helps that both of these things are 10 inches away form each other I will try to test this with alligator clips befoe cutting anything and let ya know how i turns out.

Re: Daytime running light conversion

If fog lights will pass, I see no reason why the power lead for the fog lights could'nt just be moved to a key on place. Might draw some power from the starter, but there are conections that have power in the On position, but not the Start position.

Re: Daytime running light conversion

I think GM made a DRL conversion kit available at the dealer just for this situation. It's a "universal" kit. IIRC, I think DRLs have to 70% the brightness of the regular headlights on low beam.

Re: Daytime running light conversion

I used two relays to convert my driving/fog lights to DRL. One uses key-on ignition to turn on the driving lights and the other de-energizes the first relay when I turn on the park lights. I'm effectively using the key-on ignition as another power source to turn on the driving light relay, which already exists in the install harness for driving lights. My driving lights are still operable with the switch on the dash.
