Im considering adding the three gauge pillar from summit racing, mostly so I can add a digital tach in, because my tach, like most third gen tachs, is screwed.

I really want to add some kind of gauge that will allow me to try and maximize Fuel Economy. I am never sure weather to put it in 5th gear or leave it in fourth, and I have been told adding a vacuum gauge could help me in this respect. I understand what engine vacuum is, but I dont understand how it directly relates to Fuel Economy.

What other gauges would be a good addition?

Tach is an easy fix if you have the tools, I had another member on here fix mine for me. But here it is https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...light=fix+tach. Having redundant guages in a car just doesn't make sense.

Also, IIRC, the triple guage pod pillar (autometer) doesn't exactly fit properly. The lowest guage pod is to far down and sits right on top of the dash pad. I'm not sure if that's the brand you are looking at though.

Even the Autometer 2-gauge pillar pod doesn't fit very well; same issues as the 3-gauge pod. I went with the screw-on 2-gauge. The only thing is I had to cut out the existing pillar trim to get clearance for my gauges (Stewart-Warner). I really wanted just a clock (I had this one sitting on my shelf for years) and the vacuum gauge was the only other SW heavy duty style gauge that matched the look of the clock and wasn't a duplicate of the existing gauges.

Here's a good explaination of how manifold vacuum works:
