Re: need help with reverse lights

i know when i bought my b&m megashifter it came with two microswitches for the side one would touch in park and neutral for the neutral safety switch and one that would touch in reverse for the reverse lights, the wiring is probably right there at the shifter probably just never was hooked up.

looking in my haynes manual wiring it looks like a dark blue wire supply voltage and a light green takes it the rest of the way out to the reverse lights, so if you can look on side of your shifter and find the dark blue and the light green and you have the microswitches like i did, just hook the dark blue to one side of the reverse microswitch and the light green to the other side of the microswitch.

also if you have the second switch for the neutral,
if its a 1990 or later it is a dark green or tan/white into the microswitch and a purple wire out of the switch.
if its a 1985-1989 then you have a yellow to a purple.
if its a 1984 or earlier its the same yellow to purple.
this is your standard microswitch

there should be two of them that bolt onto the side of your shifter there smaller than your thumb if not you need to try and find them i do believe they bolt side by side with two flathead screws that screw them into the side.

there is one picture at the top of the page and then two below it that clearly show the microswitches that you are looking for.

MSD 6AL CD Ignitions

Take your ignition to its limits.

These MSD 6AL ignitions are the perfect choice for the street or the track. The powerful capacitive discharge, multiple sparks ensure complete combustion of the air/fuel mixture to increase power and performance. MSD has taken the proven performance of the 6A and added a rev limiter. The soft touch rev control will protect your engine from overrevving. Adjustments are easily made with plug-in modules, so there are no dials, switches, or programs to deal with. At your selected rpm, the soft touch begins dropping the spark to some of the cylinders, and on the next cycle, these same cylinders are fired to prevent loading up with fuel. The result is a smooth and accurate limiting action without backfires or roughness. They'll work with virtually any 4, 6, or 8-cylinder vehicle with a distributor, as long as it has a 12-18 V electrical system. They include rubber shock mounts and modules for 3,000, 6,000, 7,000, and 8,000 rpm.

thats from summit racing, basically it creates a hotter spark or fire in the combustion chamber to completely burn the gas, a regular coil and ignition system is cheap and faulty, with msd you get basically a super ignition system, cleaner burn, hotter burn, better burn, saves gas by completely burning the fuel for more power, the msd boxes also apply the fire to the spark plugs at a more precicse timing, the msd 6 is the same as the 6al but the 6al has rev control to keep from overrevving the engine, it shuts the spark off to the cylinders to keep the rpms below the maximum and then fires them on the next turn.

Re: need help with reverse lights

this should show you the reverse microswitch colors, just hook them up to the microswitch the way it is shown on the switch for the gear selector, the microswitch is not dependent on the way the wires are hooked up just one on one side and one on the other side of the microswitch it just momentairly connects the wires together to make the backup lights come on,

as for the neutral safety or clutch switch it shows here a yellow wire from the ignition switch to the gear selector(neutral safety) or the clutch switch and a purple out to the starter solenoid, once again the microswitch is not dependent on the way the wires are hooked up as long as one side of the circuit is on one side and the other side of the circuit on the other terminal, hopefully this will help you get it going.

also as far as the microswitches go you need to test and see which one is for the neutral safety and which is for the reverse, if you have an ohm meter or a test light with the battery in it put the car into reverse and hook the test light or ohm meter up on one side of the microswitch and go to the other side of the same microswitch and see if you have a reading, if not you probably are hooked up to the one for the neutral safety, if you dont get a reading dont disconnect shift the trans into park or neutral and see if the circuit connects, if so youve found the neutral safety, the other switch will more than likely be the reverse or vica versa, i would test the opposite switch in the same manner if you think it is for the reverse shift the car into reverse and check the circuit, you may have a bad switch and this will go ahead and test it to save you trouble when you do go to hook them up cause youll know that both switches are good, if you hook it up by the diagrams i have provided and the test procedures i have provided im very sure you will get it if there is not a wire broken from the switch back to the reverse lights or from the switch up.
