Temp guage stuck
I recently took my IROC to Firestone to have the harmonic balancer replaced. After I was driving home my temp guage was moving up and down violently. Now it is stuck in the up position on the far right. What do I do to fix this?

Re: Temp guage stuck
Make sure the sender didn't get unplugged accidentally, or the wire fried on the exhaust. Sender is on driver side head, between #1 and #3 plugs.

Re: Temp guage stuck
Checked and everything seems to be okay. However the end of the sender seemed to have a flat round end and the plastic connector with the wire of mine is broken, however the metal connector point was fine and seemed to slide onto it from the top which was odd. It doesn't clip/snap on normally as it should. Not sure if I'm making any sense here. Wonder if the whole sender needs to be replaced?

Re: Temp guage stuck
Connector should be a standard spade connector - sender should have a male tab on it.
Driver side right? maybe someone put in the wrong sender and connector.

Re: Temp guage stuck
Check the wire. I believe if the wire going to the sender is grounded that pegs the gauge. Try grounding the wire on purpose and see if the result is the same and then look to see if that's happening somewhere. Fried by exhaust is the usual suspect

I'll purchase a new sender and compare it to the one I currently have. Just odd that it was working fine the past 2 years and now its not.

Re: Temp guage stuck
My problem: Temp gauge is pegged to the absolute bottom. So I just popped off the connector (green wire) from the temp sensor and put it to the engine bay causing a ground (correct?) and still no movement from the needle. Is the temp gauge bad or could it be the sensor?? Is there a way to test conductivity in the wire back to the gauge on the cluster??

When you start the car (when the key is in the START position) does the gage move?
If no, the gage is bad or there is a broken connection to it, and the bad connection is in the dash.
If the gage moves when the key is in the START position, you have a bad connection from the gage to the sensor, or the sensor is defective.
Ground the sensor wire under the hood.
If the gage moves to the hot range the sensor is bad.
If the gage does not move you have a bad connection from the gage to the sensor.
Check for an open connection from the sensor to the gage.

How difficult is it to fix the connection to the gage? Mine is still stuck in the up position even after replacing the sensor. Is there a kit I could purchase that would update all the connections to the guages in the dash?

Re: Temp guage stuck
No need to remove the entire cluster. Remove the bezel and lens cover to access the gauge faces. To remove/install the gauges themselves (to exclude the speedo head) remove the bezel, lens cover, and metal reflector. With a couple of small bolts removed, the gauges simply pull out and plug in.

Re: Temp guage stuck
Ok, well I was able to get everything off and pushed the needle down on the temp guage. It went down with no problems however it was loose. It doesn't have that tension on it like the other guages do. When I started the car, the temp guage start bouncing up and down violently. I pulled the guage out and noticed it was very hot from behind. Is this guage fried, and am I in need of a new temp guage? If so, then where can I locate a new one?

I am having the same issue with my temp guage. It is stuck straight up at 12 oclock. Going to pull the guage cluster bezel today and see whatsup.

Re: Temp guage stuck
The guage is done. You can pop it back down and it may work for a little while but it will eventually get stuck back upright. Some have placed a little screw in the face to keep the needle from getting high enough to stick.

Re: Temp guage stuck
I purchased mine off Ebay. Well here is what happened... I installed the new one and the needle went back to the top at 12-1 o'clock position and would not go down. I can also hear it ticking. I decided to pull it out so I don't ruin the new one. The new one has some tension on the needle whereas the old one I have has none and just flops around now. I reinstalled the old one until I figure out what is going on. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Temperature Gage Diagnosis
1. Disconnect temp. gage. Connect J-24538-A tester to sender wire & to ground. Turn ign. on. Go to step 2.
2. Gage responds to tester accurately (replace sender)
Gage does not respond or is inaccurate (go to step 3)
Gage indicates well beyond "hot" end of scale (go to step 5).
3. Disconnect temp. gage lead at harness connector. Connect J-24538-A tester to lead that goes to gage. Gage responds to tester accurately (check wiring between sender connector & engine harness connector). Gage does not respond (go to step 4).
4. Remove gage. Check for bad connections at gage terminals or inst. cluster connector or loose nuts at gage terminals. Good connections (Replace gage). Bad Connections (Repair connections & reinstall gage).
5. Remove gage. Check for loose nuts at gage terminals or lack of ground connection to gage. Good connections (Replace gage). Bad Connections (Repair connections & reinstall gage).
